Mint. India imposed a ban on onion exports last December amid concerns over domestic production shortfall caused by irregular rainfall, pushing prices up. The ban is in place until the end of the ongoing financial year.

Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bahrain and Bhutan till March 31. «We have allowed export of 50,000 tonnes of onion to Bangladesh, 1,200 tonnes to Mauritius, 3,000 tonnes of Bahrain and 560 tonnes to Bhutan with immediate effect,» Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told PTI. Traders are allowed to export this quantity till March 31. The modalities are being worked out, he said. Singh said the decision has been taken following a recommendation from the external affairs ministry.

This part of the country holds immense investment potential, said the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). «Already Rs 5 lakh crore has been invested by the government since 2014. While another Rs 11 lakh crore is underway for the region on developmental projects to improve infrastructure,» Verma told PTI on the sidelines of the North East Investors Summit. Bangladesh visa centre will be opened here soon, following the demand of people of the three districts of Assam's Barak Valley, an envoy from the neighbouring country said on Monday. Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner at Guwahati, Ruhul Amin, said there is considerable demand for visas to Bangladesh from Barak Valley comprising Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts, and thus it has been decided to open a visa centre here. Silchar is the Cachar district headquarters.

India has allowed exports of onions on government-to-government basis to some countries, on recommendation of the Ministry of External Affairs, said people aware of the matter. One of the persons said a limited quantity of onion exports has been allowed for bilateral purposes though no decision has been taken on lifting a complete ban on onion exports. Details of the exporting agency could not be ascertained. Another person said the government has permitted exports of onions in limited quantities to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bahrain, Bhutan and Nepal, among others.

Maldives has deported 186 foreigners, including 43 Indians, after accusing them of committing crimes like visa violations and drug offences, according to a media report. The highest number of people deported was from Bangladesh. At least 83 Bangladeshis were deported followed by 43 Indians, 25 Sri Lankans and 8 Nepalis. The date of their deportation is not yet known, Male-based news outlet Adhadhu reported. The deportations come as efforts are underway in the Maldives to shut down businesses operated illegally.

Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was injured on Wednesday after losing balance and falling on a car's bonnet, on which he was standing, while addressing reporters in North 24 Parganas district, following which he was taken to a hospital, a party official said. Majumdar, who was prevented from going to restive Sandeshkhali by the district administration on Tuesday, put up at a guest house in Taki late in the night following a dharna in front of the Basirhat police district SP's office. The state BJP president, who made attempts to go to Sandeshkhali again on Wednesday morning, was prevented by the police from leaving the area. Majumdar, also a Lok Sabha MP from the state's Balurghat constituency, was addressing reporters standing on the car's bonnet, when he slipped and fell on it, the party official said.
