Spike in gilt yields under watch
government bond yields and will take «appropriate» action, including delaying planned treasury auctions, if they rise beyond tolerance levels, a government official said. The benchmark 10-year G-sec yield was trading at 7.38% on Monday, a tad lower than a seven-month high of 7.40% it hit on October 9. The global financial markets have been roiled by the surge in the US bond yields with the 10-year benchmark crossing the 5% psychological mark for the first time since 2007. «The recent spike in yields is because of various factors. It is not much of a concern at this point in time.

Crude oil deficit to high inflation: How can the Israel-Hamas war impact Indian economy? — Explained
Also Read: From high inflation to import bill - the domino effect of rising crude oil prices on Indian economy With major oil producers Saudi Arabia and Russia announcing oil supply cuts of a combined 1.3 million barrels per day (mbpd) till the end of the year, the global economy already faces an oil market deficit. Now, with oil prices hovering above the $90 per barrel-mark, the escalation of the conflict towards other Middle Eastern oil producers is concerning and requires careful monitoring, especially given the global economy's 'higher for longer' interest rate scenario. The oil supply is unlikely to be threatened unless the issue expands to other nations in the region and becomes a proxy conflict between the US and Iran.

Grand Old Party: How Aging Makes You More Conservative
One of the most durable forces shaping the U.S. electorate is that voters tend to lean more Republican as they age. But it also matters where they begin on the political spectrum, and there are indications that millennials and the oldest members of Generation Z started out more liberal than prior generations.

Luxury expands beyond homes: High-end offices in demand
As luxury transcends beyond homes, commercial real estate in India is witnessing a transformative wave. While opulent residential properties have always been associated with the term ‘luxury’, a new trend is emerging – the expansion of luxury into commercial spaces. The rise of high-end offices reflects a paradigm shift in how businesses view their workplaces and the environments they thrive in. These spaces combine functionality, aesthetics, and technology to create immersive environments that foster growth, innovation, and well-being. Additionally, India’s economic resiliency, supportive government policies, and improving business environment ensure its position as an attractive market for global investors in the long run.

MNCs may face Rs 11,000 cr retro tax demand after SC ruling
tax demands for close to ₹11,000 crore on dividend income repatriated from India, following a Supreme Court ruling last week. The Supreme Court said on Thursday that the lower 5% withholding tax on dividend income of companies was not available to all Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries merely on the most favoured nation (MFN) basis. The apex court held that the 5% rate would be available only to companies based in countries with which India had notified a double taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) allowing it. In the absence of this, companies have to pay 10% tax on dividend income.

UK-India FTA raises concerns among British rice millers
British rice millers such as Tilda and Veetee Rice have thrived for decades by importing low-tariff unmilled brown rice from the likes of India and Pakistan and «polishing» the grains into the white product loved by UK consumers. But with India pressing for tariffs on white rice to be slashed, and little feedback from British trade officials, concerns are mounting for an industry that employs more than 3,000 people at 16 mills and processing plants scattered from Kent in southern England to Yorkshire in the north. «It is crucial that existing tariffs on milled (white) rice are maintained,» Alex Waugh, outgoing director of The Rice Association, said at a private event in the House of Commons last month attended by rice industry leaders and government officials.

Govt plans ₹30,000 cr push to expand crop cover portal
NEW DELHI : The government plans to earmark ₹30,000 crore to expand the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) portal into a comprehensive platform that will extend insurance coverage beyond crops to include assets such as ponds, tractors, livestock, and palm trees, two officials said. This initiative will be driven by the AIDE app, launched in July, to ensure door-to-door enrolment, making crop insurance more accessible and convenient for farmers. Through this app, insurance intermediaries will not only enrol farmers for crop insurance, but also extend coverage to 40 million farmers for non-subsidized schemes.

Israel expands evacuations as Lebanon border clashes escalate
Israel expanded planned evacuations of communities on its northern front with Lebanon on Sunday as cross-border clashes with fighters from Lebanese group Hezbollah have intensified since the war in Gaza erupted more than two weeks ago. After enacting a plan last week to move residents out of 28 border-area villages, and the nearby town of Kiryat Shmona, with state-funded temporary accommodation, the Defence Ministry said it was adding 14 communities to the evacuation list. Hezbollah and Israel have been trading fire at the frontier with increasing frequency since Palestinian group Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel responded with intense air strikes on Gaza. It is the worst escalation in violence along the Israeli-Lebanese border since the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. Iran-backed Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has yet to speak publicly about the escalation, but Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah said on Sunday the group's leader was closely monitoring developments and directing commanders in battle. The Israeli military said on Sunday it struck several Hezbollah targets in Lebanon overnight, including what it described as a compound from which a missile had been fired at one of its drones.

climate change and plastic pollution are frequently conflated in the media, in peer-reviewed research and other environmental reporting. This is understandable. Plastics are largely derived from fossil fuels and the burning of fossil fuels is the major driver of human-caused climate change.
