Foreign investors pile $11 billion into Indian markets in nine months
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. India surpassed emerging markets peers to again solidify its status as a premier destination for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), drawing consistent inflows despite bouts of turbulence and concerns over high valuations. Overseas buyers net invested $5.9 billion into domestic stocks this month alone so far, according to data from Bloomberg, attracted by the country’s economic fundamentals and beginning of the rate cut cycle in the US.

COP hosts set to increase combined oil and gas production by 33% by 2035, says report
Azerbaijan, the UAE, and Brazil — the past, current, and next hosts of the UN climate conference — are set to increase their combined oil and gas production by 33 per cent by 2035, contradicting their commitments to lead global efforts for stronger climate action, according to a new analysis. The analysis, compiled by the US-based research and advocacy group Oil Change International using industry data, shows that the UAE and Brazil are on track to increase production by 37 per cent and 38 per cent, respectively, by 2035. Azerbaijan, which will host COP29 in Baku in November, is projected to see a four per cent rise in production. At the last UN climate summit in Dubai in November-December 2023, leaders made a historic commitment to transition away from fossil fuels, triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. Oil Change International said that the ongoing expansion of oil and gas investments undermines these commitments.

Elon Musk's X platform takes first step toward lifting Brazil ban
Social media platform X has named a legal representative in Brazil — a first step toward being able to resume service in the country — but its suspension will continue until it meets further requirements, a judge has ruled. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said in a decision published Saturday that X had still «not duly met» all requirements for ending the ban, and he gave it five days to file additional documents. The high-profile judge has been engaged in a long feud with X's owner, billionaire Elon Musk, as part of his drive to crack down on disinformation in Brazil.

As drought threat grows, a 'dead tree' emoji is coming
climate change: an emoji depicting a tree without leaves. Approval of the emoji was revealed in an update earlier this year from the Unicode Consortium. The leafless tree — also known as the "dead tree" or «dying tree» emoji — was first pitched in 2022 by Brian Baihaki, who saw a gap in messaging graphics that touch on environmentalism. «Drought is a natural part of the climate cycle… but the climate is changing (and) drought (is becoming) more frequent, severe, and even (spreading) to other places,» Baihaki noted. «Eventually, all the resources that the trees have will be exhausted.»

Court gives 5 days for X to validate its Brazil legal representative
Supreme Court gave Elon Musk-owned social platform X five days to present documents validating its new legal representative in the country, a court decision showed on Saturday. X lawyers said late on Friday that it had named a legal representative in Brazil, addressing one of the demands imposed by the court to allow the social platform to resume operations in the country. In his Saturday decision, Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes gave five days for X to provide commercial registries and other documents proving that X formally signed Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its Brazil legal representative.

India abuses trade, but Modi is ‘fantastic,’ says Donald Trump before next week’s meet with Indian PM
Donald Trump on Tuesday referred to India as a “very big abuser” concerning its trade policies, specifically regarding import tariffs. Speaking at a campaign event in Michigan, Trump emphasized that India’s tariffs on imports were unfair, reflecting his long-standing critique of global trade practices. He said, «So when India, which is a very big abuser. He (Modi) happens to be coming to meet me next week, and Modi, he's fantastic. I mean, fantastic man. A lot of these leaders are fantastic.» He added that countries like Brazil and China also impose tough trade terms on the US, but China, in particular, was the most challenging of all. Further emphasizing India's competitive stance in global trade, Trump remarked, «They're not a little bit backwards...You know the expression, they're at the top of their game, and they use it against us. But India is very tough.» He also noted that Brazil, like India, maintained strict policies that made it difficult for the US to engage in fair trade. Emerging markets risk 'overreliance' on MFs, BIS warns
That vulnerability has also been increased by the fact much of the money comes in through mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, the bank said in a report published Monday. «These funds display a greater sensitivity to the dollar than other investors,» analysts Gaston Gelos, Pietro Patelli and Ilhyock Shim wrote. Developing countries should broaden their investor base to avoid an «overreliance on mutual funds.»
