How Bielsa's Uruguay pushed Argentina out of their comfort zone to secure a historic win
Uruguay orchestrated a historic night at Argentina's iconic La Bombonera, securing a 2-0 victory over their neighbors, marking their first win in Argentina since 1937. This victory, along with a recent victory over Brazil, has propelled Uruguay to within two points of Argentina in the World Cup qualifying standings, defying expectations in South America's competitive football landscape. Marcelo Bielsa, in only his fifth match as manager, displayed a uniquely Uruguayan version of his trademark coaching philosophy.

Poverty is killing the Amazon rainforest. Treating soil and farmers better can help save what's left
Brazil's Para state, flocks of noisy green parrots soar overhead as children run and play between wooden homes, kicking up sandy soil — in places white and bare as a beach. The ground reveals one of the paradoxes of the rainforest. Renowned for its beauty and biodiversity, the life-giving nutrients of the forest are mostly stored in the trees and other plants, not the soil. When the forest is cleared — for a cattle ranch, soybean field or even a small cluster of village homes — the combination of scorching Amazonian sun and intense rainfall combine to leach scarce nutrients from the soil in just a few years, leaving behind surprisingly barren ground. This impoverished dirt makes it difficult to sustain agriculture in one place. And in a region with some of the highest poverty levels in Brazil, people with few options have often just abandoned degraded fields and cleared more forest — hastening the cycle of deforestation that threatens the planet’s climate and the millions of species unique to the Amazon. “The biodiversity is rich, but so many people are very poor,” said Judson Ferreira Valentim, a soil scientist for the government’s agricultural research agency, Embrapa.

The plan to keep a lid on food prices is cooking
NEW DELHI : The Centre is prepared with a plan to ensure food security over the coming year, in the wake of an erratic monsoon that disrupted the crop calendar and boosted food prices this year. According to Union consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh, this will include sourcing pulses from a variety of countries, intervening quickly and directly in retail markets, and possible export-import related steps, depending on the situation. As part of the plan, the government is working to create a model to predict food prices that will factor in externalities like weather and trade-related measures, Singh said in an interview.

Brazil has digital public infrastructure that India could learn from
Last week, I was in Brasilia, speaking at Brazil Innovation Week, 2023. I’d been invited to talk about how India’s digital public infrastructure (DPI) offers a new approach to data governance and I was glad for the opportunity to test for myself whether the ideas I had set out in my new book held good in the Brazilian context.

Oil markets less tight than expected as supply climbs
oil markets won't be as tight as expected this quarter, as upward revisions to demand are outpaced by upgrades to supplies, the International Energy Agency said. The IEA boosted forecasts for world fuel consumption this year on surprising strength in China, and still anticipates a supply shortfall during the fourth quarter. But it will be roughly 30% smaller than previously projected, at about 900,000 barrels a day. «World oil demand continues to exceed expectations,» the Paris-based agency said in its latest monthly report.
