Reuters Yellow Food Myanmar DAL country Headlines Atmanirbhar thali: Govt is bringing self-sufficiency to dining table
food inflation in India as analysts track food inflation with thali prices. Persistent food inflation has made the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) hard in large measure due to prices of vegetables which are perishable in nature and also subject to vagaries of weather which have been made worse by climate change. Another item on the thali which keeps its price high is pulses, especially tur (also called arhar) dal which India imports in large measure. In June, prices of pulses surged 21.64% year-on-year, more than double the 9.21% increase seen a year ago, according to government data. India imported all major pulses, including tur, urad, masoor, chana and yellow peas, in 2023-24 due to low domestic production on account of erratic rainfall, spending around $3.74 billion during the financial year.

UPS Man Mobile Myanmar country Inside mountaineering Posing as ‘Alicia,’ this man scammed hundreds online. He was also a victim.
MAE SOT, Thailand—In late December, Guracha Belachew Bersha helped lead a small but brazen rebellion. He’d been enslaved for 16 months in a twisted new criminal empire in which Chinese gangsters traffic people from around the world, often to remote and lawless parts of Southeast Asia, and force them to sit at computers all day scamming strangers online. The cyber frauds they’re forced to commit are called pig butchering, named for the way the perpetrators fatten up their victims by gaining their trust before taking their money and cutting them loose.

Waters Gap Racing Bill country The Dalai Lama may soon reveal his succession plan, and it’ll have geopolitical ramifications
Dalai Lama's next move. Their top-of-the-mind question is whether the Tibetan leader will be announcing his successor. Supporters of the 14th Dalai Lama, which include US lawmakers, are worried that China will try to beat him in the race and declare its own 15th Dalai Lama. 'They have even attempted to insert themselves into the succession of the Dalai Lama. We will not let that happen,' said Republican chair of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul. For Tibetans living in China and spread across several countries, the Dalai Lama is a 'living Buddha' and represents the symbol of Tibetan identity and Chinese repression. He escaped from Tibet to India in 1959 after Chinese troops took over Tibet and indulged in a bloodbath.

Citi Food community DISH Fishing country Does the future of South Asian cuisine lie in the Middle East
Sri Lankan community in New York City probably gravitated to Staten Island, just below Manhattan because of cheaper rents, but there might be other reasons why the place feels familiar. One of the best ways to get a good meal in New York is to board the Staten Island ferry. It’s free, you pass the Statue of Liberty and at the other end are a bunch of great Sri Lankan restaurants. You can savour their curries with their distinctive deeply roasted spices and the underlying umami note from the grated dried tuna called Maldi fish, enjoy the hoppers (appams) and rich coconut rice and finish with one of the best desserts ever, thick yoghurt with kithul (fishtail palm syrup). And you can wonder why Staten Island has more Sri Lankan restaurants than all of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third swearing-in saw heads of neighbouring South Asian countries appear as guests. It might have been more meaningful without the one obvious omission, but it still seemed a gesture towards something that has almost vanished — the idea of South Asia beyond just how the countries affect each other on a political level. There are links of history, geography, cultural exchange, personal histories, environmental connections and, yes, food that also count in the South Asian space.
