Canada intensifies $48 million plan to protect temporary foreign workers from scams
Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) rules, issuing $2.1 million in Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs) in 2023. Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program remains vital for addressing labor and skill shortages when qualified Canadians and permanent residents are unavailable. The program, managed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), aims to ensure foreign workers are protected during their stay in Canada, the government said in a statement. In the last fiscal year, ESDC conducted 2,122 inspections under the TFW Program, finding 94% of employers compliant. However, non-compliant employers faced $2.1 million in Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs), a 36% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 12 employers were banned from the program, up from seven in the prior year. Non-compliant employers are publicly listed on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) website.

Argentina seek 'triple crown' but Colombia aim for upset in Copa final
Argentina can become the first South American team to win the 'triple crown' of three straight major tournament titles if they can overcome a formidable Colombia in Sunday's Copa America final. Inspired by Lionel Messi, Argentina followed up their 2021 Copa America title with the World Cup triumph a year later and have advanced with little drama to this weekend's showpiece with the Colombians. Spain are the only other team in international football to have won a World Cup in between two straight continental titles when they clinched Euro wins in 2008 and 2012 either side of the 2010 World Cup.

You may qualify for this valuable tax credit without even knowing it
The disability tax credit is a non-refundable credit that a taxpayer — or their family — can claim annually on their return. It reduces the tax payable to offset the increased costs resulting from physical or mental impairment. The disability tax credit is also a gateway to other financial incentives, and many people who qualify do not realize it.

Expect the CRA to come knocking if you ‘hire’ your spouse to split income
With taxpayers in eight out of 10 provinces facing a 2024 top marginal personal income tax rate exceeding 50 per cent, it should come as no surprise that some couples are looking at ways to income split, especially when one spouse or partner is in a much higher tax bracket than the other. Consider, for example, a British Columbia high-income taxpayer facing a top marginal rate of 53.5 per cent. If their spouse or partner earns under about $55,000, their marginal rate is only 22.7 per cent — a spread of more than 30 percentage points.
