Scrapping your old car may fetch more soon
₹10,000 crore and create 35,000 jobs, something that failed to materialize as owners chose to continue to sell old vehicles in rural areas instead. “The reason for the failure of this scheme is lack of incentives," said a government official, one of the two people cited above. "So, the plan is that both the government and automobile manufacturers offer incentives to the consumers—government incentives may come in the form of taxes, and auto manufacturers incentive could come in the form of discounts on the price of the vehicle," the official added.

Did inflation ease in January? Here’s what economists expect
inflation rate has edged up and down over the last several months after dropping from its 2022 highs as global price pressures fade and the economy cools.Statistics Canada is set to release its January consumer price index report on Tuesday and forecasters expect Canada’s inflation rate fell. RBC, CIBC and TD all project the annual rate eased to 3.2 per cent, down from 3.4 per cent in December.Nathan Janzan, RBC’s assistant chief economist says the slowdown was likely driven by energy and food prices.“Gasoline prices were lower than a year ago in January and food price growth probably continued to slow on a year over-year-basis,” he said.“I think the attention will be more focused on the other components of CPI, just watching for signs that broader inflation pressures are continuing to slow, if only at a gradual pace.”As high borrowing costs cause consumers and businesses to pull back on spending, inflation is expected to slowly inch closer to the two per cent target by the end of the year. But unlike what’s typical when interest rates rise, the housing market won’t be helping the economy slow.

Justin Trudeau's welcome mat for immigrants wears thin amid Canada housing crunch
Justin Trudeau has relied on immigration to drive economic growth and plug labor gaps, but now he is hitting the brakes after a seismic shift in public opinion that could undermine his chances to win the next election. It was Trudeau's father, Pierre, who championed immigration as prime minister in the early 1970s, promoting «multiculturalism» as government policy. Over time, Canadians have come to see the country's diversity as part of its identity, like the maple leaf and hockey. Think you check all the immigration boxes? Find out But when international students led a surge in immigration in the wake of the pandemic, the public mood soured as rental costs soared and services like healthcare came under strain.
