Waters Google CEO Sustainability Parke wellness stage Bengaluru water crisis: Tech parks rely on sustainable designs, practices to function
water shortage that Bengaluru is reeling under, several of the city’s technology parks said they are able to maintain operations without much impact, thanks to their long-term focus on sustainability. Operators of these business parks, which house tech giants like Google, Accenture and Tata Consultancy Services, have implemented green initiatives such as harvesting rainwater, utilising on-campus RO plants for water treatment and reducing their electricity consumption. These measures, they said, have so far helped them effectively manage the situation. Meanwhile, they are also asking their tenants to be watchful about water consumption. As a result of design changes made for sustainability purposes, the overall water consumption of tech parks managed by Vestian has reduced by 35%, said Shrini Rao, chief executive of the commercial real estate services firm. “Business parks have implemented changes such as installing rainwater harvesting systems and using air-cooled systems in their air conditioning equipment instead of water-cooled systems,” said Rao. “Over the last decade we have seen campus projects developed in Bangalore focus heavily on sustainability parameters. The designs implemented for washrooms are mostly recycled water, for example, as the designs for landscape elements like lawns … all of these choices have reduced the impact of water shortage on commercial parks.”
