WhatsApp prevention LG nod for CBI probe against Satyendar Jain in Sukesh's extortion complaint
Delhi LG V K Saxena has granted sanction for a CBI probe against former minister Satyendar Jain in a complaint of extortion filed by money laundering accused Sukesh Chandrashekhar, officials said on Saturday. Jain is accused of extorting Rs 10 crore from Chandrashekhar as "protection money". A former director general of Tihar jail was also accused in the matter, the Raj Niwas officials said. The LG has given his nod for a CBI inquiry against Jain under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, they said.

Delhi: Rat-hole miner Wakeel Hassan, who had lost his house in a demolition drive, has rejected another offer of a house in Dilshad Garden here by the authorities, he told PTI on Saturday. «On Friday night, four government officers, including an SDM, came and offered me a house in Dilshad Garden but I refused to accept it as they wanted me to shift on a temporary basis,» Hassan said. «It was also not in writing. That house belongs to an NGO,» he said. Hours after the demolition, DDA officials offered Hassan to move to an EWS (economically weaker sections) flat at Narela, which is far from Khajoori Khas in northeast Delhi. Hassan rejected it saying it was «far and unsafe».

Delhiites witnessed a light drizzle on Saturday morning, with the sunrise obscured by dark clouds. The IMD forecasted light to moderate rain throughout the day, with certain areas likely to experience hailstorms. An orange alert has been issued for the city, urging residents to stay updated with the weather forecast.

Delhi government is providing skills training to more than 1,300 beggars who were identified in a survey conducted before the G20 Summit in the national capital last year, according to the city's Economic Survey. Finance minister Atishi presented the Economic Survey of the city in the Delhi Assembly on Friday. The Department of Social Welfare has been designated with the responsibility of providing skills training to the relocated homeless beggars at the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB)-operated night shelters with a focus on integrating them into mainstream society, the report said. An inter-departmental committee had been established before the G20 summit and was tasked with the responsibility of formulating strategies for the rehabilitation and relocation of beggars, according to the survey.

Hassan was part of a team of miners who rescued 41 workers trapped inside Uttarkashi's Silkyara tunnel by manually drilling through the debris in November last year.

Justice Subramonium Prasad said it is always open for applicant Kailash Chandra Moondra to approach the appropriate authority under the Income Tax Act to seek information as sought in the Right to Information (RTI) application. The high court was dealing with a plea by the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of CBDT seeking quashing of the November 30, 2022, order of the CIC which had directed that the CPIO would revisit certain points made in the application under the RTI Act and provide information within 15 days from the receipt of the order.

Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition by ArcelorMittal India seeking grant of mining lease in Jharkhand's Saranda forest division. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna found no merit in ArcelorMittal's petition, saying the approval granted by the Centre to the company in 2007 and 2008 was conditional and no mining lease could be executed in its favour in the absence of the pre-conditions being met. «It is to be noted that till date, the petitioner does not have approval of the Central government under Section 2(ii) of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. The petitioner also does not have environment clearance under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986,» the court said.
