1,600 tonnes of onions coming to Delhi riding 'Kanda Express' for first time
onion prices ahead of the festive season, the government will transport 1,600 tonnes of buffer stock via railways from Maharashtra to Delhi — the first such initiative using rail transport for the kitchen staple. The special rake, dubbed 'Kanda Express', will depart from Maharashtra's Lasalgaon Railway Station and reach Delhi's Kishanganj Railway Station on October 20, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare announced on Thursday. The government expects this bulk movement to help stabilise prices in the Delhi-NCR region, where buffer stock onions are currently being sold at a subsidised rate of Rs 35 per kg. Currently, retail prices are ruling high up to Rs 75 per kg in different cities. «This rail transport initiative marks a historic first,» Khare said, adding that similar arrangements will be extended to Lucknow, Varanasi and northeastern states including Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.

Airline bomb hoax: Agencies on alert; Mumbai police detains juvenile
bomb threats, the Centre asserted that agencies are actively pursuing the cases even as the Mumbai Police apprehended a juvenile from Chhattisgarh for three such hoax calls. Meanwhile, to ensure the safety of passengers, the government is likely to increase the number of sky marshals on international flights. The government on Wednesday informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport that it is considering deploying a greater number of the elite National Security Guards (NSG) personnel on international flights. Civil aviation secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam also told the committee that investigators have gathered some information on the recent threats and are taking action. Separately, civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu said he is monitoring the situation closely. A senior official of the Central Industrial Security Forces, the paramilitary force that handles airport security, said state police have been asked to arrest and take strong action against people making such threats. At least 19 Indian flights received hoax bomb threats in the past three days, leading to long delays and diversions. On Tuesday, Singapore's air force sent two fighter jets to escort an Air India Express plane away from populated areas after the airline received an email that there was a bomb on the aircraft.

What factor will swing Maharashtra verdict - crop, caste or cash? Poll drama turns more and more intense
This election could determine the fate of political parties like Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Times of India newspaper wrote on October 16. The Congress, which ranked fourth in the last assembly election, hopes to build on its parliamentary resurgence. For the BJP, a win is vital after a disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha (LS) elections, where it secured only nine seats in Maharashtra, the report (by Priyanka Kakodkar) said. The ruling Mahayuti alliance has introduced several welfare schemes to win voters, including a Rs 1,500 monthly stipend for underprivileged women under the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. This initiative, costing Rs 46,000 crore annually, aims to mimic the success of similar schemes in other states.
