Deepening Canada-India standoff seen as a short-term boost for Modi, Trudeau
Canada kicked out six Indian diplomats on Monday, linking them to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader and alleging a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in Canada. India retaliated by telling six Canadian diplomats to leave. Although the tit-for-tat move sent bilateral relations skidding to a new low, Narendra Modi and Justin Trudeau are unlikely to mind too much. Both leaders are in their third terms and face political challenges.

credit marketplace Paisabazaar, a part of listed PB Fintech, is taking a leaf out of sister concern Policybazaar’s playbook and building its own offline distribution channel. As it builds out its secured credit distribution play, Paisabazaar wants to create a physical presence to help in fulfilment of such loan delivery. Speaking with ET, Naveen Kukreja, chief executive officer of Paisabazaar, said it has set up a field team of around 100 people in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, targeting secured credit products like home loans and loans against property. It is also testing other products like loans against cars and securities, but those are still in the beta stages. By the end of this fiscal, it intends to scale up this team to 500.

Delhi court refuses to cancel lookout circular against ATS Infrastructure's promotor
Delhi court has refused to cancel a lookout circular (LOC) against real estate company ATS Infrastructure Limited's promotor Geetamber Anand and his wife Poonam Anand in connection with multiple FIRs lodged against the builder. The FIRs include those lodged by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police for allegedly defrauding homebuyers, and another a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate. Judicial Magistrate Yashdeep Chahal, in an order passed on September 13, said the accused had appeared to join the investigation as and when required, however, «the LOC appeared to be a safeguard to ensure that judicial process is not frustrated in any manner». «Even if the applicants are directed to obtain prior permission of the court before travelling abroad, the accused could always travel without obtaining any such permission and there would be no way for the court to enforce a condition of that nature,» he said.

A variety of paddy has found centre-stage in Delhi NCR's pollution debate
paddy variety PR-126, developed by Punjab Agricultural University, is at the center of a debate in Punjab. The AAP-led state government supports this variety, but the opposition Congress criticizes it for its lower yield. According to a TOI report, PR-126 has the advantage of reducing farming costs and helping combat air pollution in Delhi-NCR. This variety matures in 123-125 days, compared to the popular Pusa-44 variety's 155-160 days. This shorter growth period saves on irrigation and energy costs, and preserves groundwater. Additionally, it provides farmers with enough time to prepare for the next crop without resorting to stubble burning. However, PR-126 yields 4-5 quintals less per acre than Pusa-44, which produces 35-36 quintals per acre. It also yields 5 kg less rice during milling. This has led Punjab Opposition leader Partap Singh Bajwa to criticize Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for promoting PR-126.

Bishnoi gang hires hitmen with no criminal record
Baba Siddique and probe any possible involvement of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, officials said that the modus operandi of the Bishnoi gang is to engage youth with no criminal records while meeting between its associates and selection of a target is done inside jails as members of the gang are wanted by police across various states in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai. Bishnoi has been lodged in Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad since 2023. «These gangsters engage their criminal network to lure unemployed youth, not only in Punjab but also from the neighbouring states by offering them either huge amounts of money or a promise of helping them settle abroad,» according to the NIA. For the killing of Siddique, police officials said the shooters were first timers. Early this year, the gang was behind the killing of INLD chief Nafee Singh Rathee and a Gurugram-based bookie Sachin Munjal. Bishnoi's associate from Canada, Rohit Godara, had claimed responsibility for the killing. On Bishnoi's alleged proceeds of crimes, the NIA has unearthed that one Manish Bhandari, living in Thailand, manages the funds. Bhandari runs the night club chain named Bollywood Club, Cama Club and a hotel-cum-restaurant Punappa in Thailand. The money collected through extortion, illegal liquor and arms smuggling business is sent to Bhandari in Thailand through hawala for investing in night clubs and bars, according to the NIA.
