Artillery fire could be heard from the front line in Ukraine on Friday, even after the official start of a unilateral ceasefire declared by Moscow and rejected by Kyiv.

On 24 February 2022, Russian forces crossed into Ukraine with the objective of demilitarizing the country and deterring Kyiv from joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Russian strategic planners expected a Ukrainian collapse within a fortnight. Four years on, Moscow has yet to achieve its core wartime objectives of gaining complete control over the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

Vitali Klitschko said the city was under missile attack on Sunday with explosions in the Ukrainian capital, two days after a Russian missile killed 18 people in President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown. Klitschko said paramedics had been sent to two districts in Kyiv, while the Ukrainian air force said missiles had entered the northern Chernihiv region. «Explosions in the capital. Air defence is in operation,» Klitschko said on Telegram. «The missile attack on Kyiv continues. Stay in shelters!» He added that three people were injured so far, and said there was reported wreckage falling in two non-residential sites.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday confirmed that the death toll from recent Russian strikes has reached 16 in Kryvyi Rih, including six children, while five others were killed in Kharkiv following a targeted drone attack. He further said that 34 people were also injured in the strike, which involved six «Shahed» drones. Sharing a post on X, Zelenskyy wrote, «Rescue operations are currently underway in Kryvyi Rih following a Russian missile strike. As of now, 16 people are confirmed dead, including six children. In Kharkiv, rescue efforts continued all day after a targeted Russian drone strike. A deliberate attack by six „Shahed“ drones. Sadly, five people were killed. Thirty-four were injured. My condolences to all the families and loved ones. In Kherson — another targeted strike by a Russian FPV drone hit an energy facility — the Kherson thermal power plant.» He further said, «These strikes cannot be accidental — the Russians know exactly what they're hitting. They know these are energy facilities that should be protected from attacks under what Russia itself promised to the American side. Every Russian promise ends with missiles or drones, bombs or artillery. Diplomacy means nothing to them.»

The same 'transition' model was followed with Federated States of Micronesia and Palau, both of which officially gained independence from US 'trusteeship' in 1990 and 1994, respectively.

Ukrainian shelling of Russia-held areas of the Donetsk region killed two people in the village of Horlivka, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said. Three people were wounded by Russian drone strikes in southern Ukraine's partly occupied Kherson region, local officials said Sunday morning. In the country's northeast, officials in the Kharkiv region said two people were wounded when a village was hit by Russian shells.

Ukraine fired dozens of drones at Russia's southern Rostov region, home to its army headquarters for the military offensive, in the early hours of Friday, Russian officials said. Russia's defence ministry said it downed 53 Ukrainian drones overnight — 44 over the Rostov region — while the governor said a power station was damaged in the attack. Rostov-on-Don, the capital of the region that sits just across the border from Ukraine, is the command headquarters for Russia's military campaign and home to a swathe of Russian military sites.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday called on the West to rapidly deliver more air-defence systems as a wave of Russian missile, drone and artillery strikes killed at least 11 people. Eight were confirmed dead, including a child and a baby, after an overnight drone strike on the southern port city of Odesa, a regional official said. Separate shelling attacks on the frontline regions of Kharkiv in the northeast and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south killed another three people, Ukrainian officials said. «Russia continues to hit civilians,» Zelenskyy said in a post on social media.

Reuters could not independently confirm the reports. «Today at noon in the southern sector — minus three Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers!» Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat described it on national television as a «brilliantly planned operation.» «There haven't been Su-34s for some time in our positive statistics,» he said, citing the model as one of Russia's most modern aircraft for bombing and other assaults. Zelenskiy in his nightly video address praised the Odesa region anti-aircraft unit for downing the planes in Kherson region. The region was occupied in the first days of Moscow's February 2022 invasion.

KYIV (Reuters) -President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday thanked Ukraine's military for fighting Russian attacks and its rescue services for tackling the consequences of extreme winter weather that he said had deprived about 400 settlements in 10 regions of power.

(Reuters) — Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday demanded rapid changes in the operations of Ukraine's military and announced the dismissal of the commander of the military's medical forces.

Ukraine's marine corps said on Friday it has secured multiple bridgeheads on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River in the Kherson region in fighting it described as having left nearly 3,500 Russians killed or wounded and dozens of ammunition depots, tanks, armoured vehicles and other weaponry destroyed. The Marine Infantry Command's claims are the first to come directly from the Ukrainian military about advances across one of Russia's most significant strategic barriers.
