Lowe's Extreme Pride Villagers in Sunderbans are now feasting on fresh hilsa fish, morning, noon & night
Monsoon has always been synonymous with a generous serving of ilish/hilsa for the Bengali community. The season of rain and cloudy skies is always incomplete without a plateful of piping hot hilsa curry & rice, or a fried fish or two! No other fish evokes a sense of hunger, pride, and nostalgia in the hearts of Bengalis than the evergreen, ever-yummy King Of Fish- hilsa! Inhabitants of a remote village in the Sundarbans are getting to relish several helpings of this fragrant fish! The villagers are indulging in the delectable hilsa for breakfast, lunch, and dinner after their fishermen caught thousands of tonnes of small hilsa fish from the local rivers. As per a rule, ‘khoka ilish’ or juvenile hilsa cannot be sold in the Kolkata markets. In order to be eligible for sale, the fish has to be 500g or more. The fish that has been caught weighs between 90 and 300 grams. This has led to the fish being sold at extremely cheap rates at the Sundarban markets such as Diamond Harbour, Namkhana, Kakdwip, etc. In an interview with the Times Of India, a resident of Sunderbans revealed how a mere sales policy had led to delicious meals day in and day out, for the villagers. “We are having fried hilsa even with morning tea!” revealed Saral Das, a resident of Mousuni, an island in the Sunderbans archipelago. Fishing weighing around 120 kg is being sold for as low as Rs 80. Those weighing 250 kg are available at Rs 150.
