When you're stuck in a far-flung cauldron
trips go as planned. We were the last flight to touch down before the airport closed for an indefinite period. But driving down to Noumea, capital of New Caledonia, a French territory comprising dozens of islands in the South Pacific, we were still blissfully unaware of this. For nearly two weeks, we would sleep with the sonorous drone of choppers circling over our Hotel Le Paris, and we had no way of leaving the island. A state of emergency had been declared, a strict curfew imposed, and no restaurants or shops were open for business. Had we greedily ignored the warning signs? From East Timor we had planned to travel to Vanuatu via Sydney. But then Air Vanuatu announced its bankruptcy and cancelled all fights. Since we intended to travel onward to New Caledonia before returning to Singapore, we figured we might as well spend some extra time on Grand-Terre, the largest island in the Melanesian archipelago.

Health insurance: New rule for faster cashless approvals might get off to a slow start
recently made it mandatory for medical insurance firms to authorise cashless hospitalisation within 1 hour of a request being made, and within 3 hours for a final approval at discharge. The new rules are to be implemented by 31 July. This, however, is unlikely to ease the plight of policyholders, say industry experts. For one, according to several experts Mint spoke with, hospitals spend much time in processing medical bills and sending them to insurers.“If there is a delay of 12 hours after the treating doctor gives a go-ahead for discharge, hospitals will have taken 8 hours and insurance companies the rest," said Dr. Prashant Mishra, a Mumbai-based cardiac surgeon. The other significant challenge arises when insurance companies seek additional information from hospitals.“The tariffs for many surgeries are fixed in packages.

The NHRC observed that given the registration of cases involving the selling of girls in some communities in the recent past, it appears that the practice is still continuing unabated. It has said that this practice requires to be curbed forthwith in totality and stringent steps be taken by all the stakeholders.

India's fast economic growth lays firm ground for next government
India's economy grew at a faster-than-expected pace of 7.8% year-on-year in the first three months of 2024, helped by a strong performance in the manufacturing sector, and economists expect the momentum to continue this year. The highest growth pace among the largest economies globally will bolster the economic record of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is hoping to win a rare third term in the national election, with results set to be released on June 4. Investors are looking ahead to the election outcome and the full-year budget in mid-July to see what steps the new government might take to boost the economy.
