Parle-G: The humble biscuit that became the taste of India
Parle G is still going strong. This iconic product, for its ubiquity as well as longevity, can serve as a viewpoint to tell several stories — how a product ticks all the boxes to become so popular with the masses and remains so for long; how India's vast poor population has been a large consuming class too that supports big FMCG companies; how the long-held popularity of Parle G points at India's largest consuming classes remaining massed at the bottom as India failed to lift them out of poverty for long; and how the premiumisation of Parle G indicates Indians gaining more spending power. Yet, the most memorable Parle G story remains of a humble biscuit that became the most loved food item of modern India, defying shifting fashions of taste and divisions of class. From Gavaskar to migrant labourers Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had a weakness for Parle G biscuits and loved to eat them with his tea or coffee.

Bilkis Bano case: Supreme Court questions convict for depositing fine when matter is under consideration
Supreme Court on Thursday questioned one of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case and the murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots for depositing the fine imposed on him when the hearing on the pleas challenging his remission was underway before it. Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, appearing for convict Ramesh Rupabhai Chandana, told a bench of justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan that convicts have approached the trial court in Mumbai and have deposited the fine imposed upon them. «Does non deposit of fine has a bearing on the remission? Did you apprehend that non deposit of fine would have a impact on the merits of the case. First you ask for permission and now without permission you have deposited,» the bench said. Responding to the court's query, Luthra said non-deposition of fine does not affect the decision on remission but he had advised his clients to deposit the fine to «reduce the controversy». «According to me, this has no legal consequence. But since the argument was raised...To reduce the controversy, we have deposited now,» he said. The submission assumes significance as one of the PIL petitioners, challenging the remission granted to convicts, has argued that their premature release is illegal as they have not served their sentence in entirety.

BJP slams INDIA bloc as 'selfish alliance' aimed at promoting interests of some families
BJP on Thursday slammed the opposition INDIA bloc as a «selfish alliance» aimed at promoting and protecting the interests of families at the helm of its member parties. With 28 opposition parties meeting in Mumbai to give concrete shape to their agenda against the BJP, the ruling party's spokesperson Sambit Patra said the Congress' «missile» will never launch as it has no fuel. The BJP's Chandrayaan will successfully land for a third time in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as it is fuelled by development, he told reporters, drawing an analogy with the country's historic lunar exploration mission. «The CMP (common minimum programme) being discussed in the INDIA alliance is, in fact, all about having „corruption's maximum profit“ as all these parties together represent scams worth over Rs 20 lakh crore,» he alleged. Their other aim is to deliver a blow to the stable and pro-development dispensation running under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, he added. Patra said the opposition's attempt to come together is a game of musical chairs and that these parties engage before every election against the BJP even though their own alliance is marked by mutual fight and one-upmanship over who will be the prime ministerial face. This «ghamandia alliance» is a selfish grouping, he said, alleging that leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Lalu Prasad Yadav are more likely to be driven by the future of their children in politics than the country's development. Their goal is «maximum parivarvaad», he claimed.
