J&K polls: Omar Abdullah smells 'conspiracy' against him from Delhi
National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah on Friday alleged that leaders in New Delhi 'hate' him, want to 'silence' him and 'keep conspiring' against him, as he represents the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. «This is a strange election. I knew that leaders in Delhi never liked me. But now I have realised that they hate me and they want to silence me,» said Abdullah, while addressing an election rally here. Abdullah, while referring to his loss in the Lok Sabha polls from Baramulla against jailed Awami Ittehad Party leader Engineer Rashid, said, «A candidate who was behind bars (Engineer Rashid) filed the nomination against me. He recorded an audio clip and circulated it among the electorate… I thought maybe it was my bad luck. I did not see any conspiracy in it. But for the last 2 to 3 days, it seems like a conspiracy to me… daal main kuch kala hai… I don't understand in this situation how those behind bars file nominations only against me.»

India power emissions must peak by 2026 to meet Paris pact
net zero by the middle of the century and align itself with the Paris Agreement, according to BloombergNEF, a target that’s unlikely to be met due to the government’s push for the continued use of coal. The world’s third-biggest emitter needs $12.4 trillion in investment to reach net zero ahead of its official target of 2070, BNEF said in its New Energy Outlook for India published Thursday. That includes funding to accelerate clean energy deployment, large-scale adoption of electric vehicles, and scaling up new technologies like carbon capture and green hydrogen to decarbonize the coal-dependent economy. The report comes as India expands renewables but remains heavily reliant on coal to meet the power needs of the world’s largest population, prompting calls for it to be more ambitious in weaning itself off the dirtiest fossil fuel to support the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global warming below 2C (3.6F).

Certain steel industry players have raised concerns over rising imports from China at lower rates. «I have invited the steel industry...to understand the unfair competition that some of them are facing and take appropriate measures so that the steel industry remains vibrant, continues to grow and adds jobs to the Indian economy,» Goyal told reporters here. On September 5, he mooted the idea of introducing a border adjustment tax to protect the domestic players by providing a level-playing field against increasing imports.

View: In India, some mergers and acquisitions are more equal than others
short seller and the Indian market regulator, a completely different controversy is brewing. It involves the country’s second-most-valuable bank, and its plan to swallow up its securities affiliate. Some shareholders of the brokerage firm, upset over the terms of the buyout, want to know how the Securities and Exchange Board of India allowed the delisting of ICICI Securities Ltd., waiving the regulator’s own rules for compensating minority investors. A company-law tribunal in Mumbai quashed their challenge on Aug. 21 and allowed the deal to proceed. But that isn’t the end of the matter. There is a separate class-action suit before another tribunal in New Delhi. This dispute is also being heard by a higher court in Mumbai, the country’s commercial capital. The Indian regulator is battling bigger trouble elsewhere. In an Aug. 10 note, Hindenburg Research drew attention to SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch’s past personal investments, and her ownership of a consulting outfit, to question the watchdog’s objectivity in probing the Adani Group, the target of the short seller’s original January 2023 report. The infrastructure conglomerate, which suffered a $150 billion drop in its market value in the aftermath of the publication, has strenuously denied the short seller’s claims of stock-price manipulation. The group’s shares have recouped most of their losses. Buch described the allegation of potential conflict as “character assassination” and said that she made all the appropriate disclosures and recusals.
