Hathras and the tragic history of major stampedes at religious events in India
stampede at a Hindu religious gathering in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, authorities said, in one of the worst such tragedies in recent years. The stampede happened in a village in Hathras district, about 200 km southeast of the national capital New Delhi, where authorities said a large crowd had gathered on an open area of land in response to a call from a religious leader. Here is a list of major stampedes in India over the years, most of them at religious festivals or gatherings: JANUARY 2005: More than 265 Hindu devotees were killed and hundreds more injured after a stampede at the Mandhardevi temple in Wai town in the western state of Maharashtra. EAM Jaishankar on Astana declaration: SCO’s tough terror stance a win for India
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Astana contained the most robust language ever on cross-border terrorism as well as strong references to territorial integrity linked to connectivity corridors in the region, external affairs minister S Jaishankar told ET. He described this as the most satisfying outcome of the summit from India’s viewpoint. “I am happy that Kazakhstan during their chairmanship negotiated an updated programme to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, which was adopted in the Astana summit,” the minister said. “What is more important is the actual implementation of the programme that we have now successfully drawn up, which includes unambiguous commitment by all the member states in getting rid of all forms and manifestations of terrorism in the region, including cross-border terrorism.” The summit was held in the Kazakhstan capital on July 3-4.

Modi to focus on trade imbalance, Indian soldiers in talks with Putin
trade imbalance with Russia and securing the discharge of Indians misled into fighting in the Ukraine war will be among Prime Minister Narendra Modi's priorities during talks in Moscow next week, a top official said on Friday. Modi will visit Russia on July 8-9 for talks with President Vladimir Putin as part of annual summits between New Delhi and Moscow, launched in 2000. Modi's visit coincides with the July 9-11 NATO summit in Washington at which the Ukraine war will hold centre stage, and the timing has raised questions about the signal India could be sending.

Piyush Goyal to visit Switzerland to take forward EFTA commitments
Goyal Wednesday said the four-member European nation bloc European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is keen to invest in India and the domestic industry should take advantage of that opportunity. Goyal, who is visiting Switzerland on Sunday to take forward the EFTA commitments, said that this $100 billion commitment is for foreign direct investments and not portfolio investments. Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland comprise the EFTA. In March, India and EFTA signed a free trade agreement under which New Delhi received an investment commitment of $100 billion in 15 years from the grouping while allowing several products such as Swiss watches, chocolates and cut and polished diamonds at lower or zero duties.

SCO Summit to adopt document on countering terror and extremism
SCO) Summit being held here under the Kazakhstan Presidency will adopt an important document to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, echoing India's stand on countering terrorism and radicalisation in the Eurasian region. Three ways Budget 2024 can put more money in aam aadmi's pocket
NEW DELHI : Citizens always eagerly wait for the budget in the hope of getting more tax benefits. While the clamour for tax deductions grows, one aspect that is worrisome is the retail participation in high-risk investments like derivatives, intraday trading and high-fixed-return schemes. Driven by the stupendous performance and high taxation on regulated schemes, investors across age groups are investing in instruments that could carry much higher risk than they understand or can accept.

New EV policy may allow ongoing investments for incentives, Vinfast to benefit
New Delhi: The government is likely to allow electric vehicle (EV) makers to benefit from a new policy that was announced this March, even if their investments were made earlier, according to two officials aware of the development. We need better information on the impact of climate change
It isn’t hard to understand that global warming is already changing how we live. In India’s capital, New Delhi, this summer has been so hot—above 40° Celsius even at night—that people are gasping, tap water is scalding and the walls of their homes emit heat like radiators. The Saudi Arabian authorities said that 1,300 pilgrims have already died on this year’s Hajj.

When decor meets dining
When you enter a restaurant, the entire experience takes centrestage and goes beyond food. This statement by Mumbai-based architect-designer Ashiesh Shah, who has spearheaded projects like Sequel and Neuma in Mumbai, among others, probably sums up the design-forward approach being taken by restaurants across the country. While the food remains integral, these establishments are also betting big on innovative decor elements to carve out a niche for themselves and offer an immersive dining experience to guests.
