Tax treatment of delayed payments to micro, small businesses in for a tweak
NEW DELHI : The government introduced a tax provision last year to prod large corporations into paying their micro and small enterprise vendors in time, only to hear concerns that it could backfire on the intended beneficiaries. It’s now looking to modify how large companies are taxed for delayed payments so that they do not decide to sidestep smaller vendors altogether to avoid the stringent tax treatment, said two officials aware of discussions in the government.

Manipur CM clarifies MLAs' visit to central leaders not for seeking resignation
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that some MLAs have gone to meet central leaders to effectively address Manipur's issues, not to seek his resignation. A meeting of MLAs was held on Thursday where it was decided to submit a memorandum for lasting peace in Manipur and to make a courtesy call for the victory of the NDA in the general election. Singh mentioned that a small committee would meet central leaders. The memorandum was signed by around 34 to 35 NDA MLAs. He highlighted that it was decided to seek appointments with the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister after the parliamentary session. «They MLAs have entrusted me for getting the appointment,» he said. Biren Singh clarified, «Some MLAs have gone for people are seeking solution and peace. This is rumours promoted by vested interest groups that they have gone to seek my resignation. It is wrong.» He further explained that at the meeting, MLAs expressed their appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their resolve to solve the Manipur issue. «Shah has even started holding meetings with different agencies,» Singh stated.

Elections push highway construction in slow lane despite high capex
NEW DELHI : The nearly three-month-long election process slowed down the construction of highways in the first two months of fiscal year 2024-25 despite the Centre front-loading capital expenditure, showed data from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH). The highway construction fell by12% to 1,288 kilometres in April-May from 1,465km in the year-ago period, showed the data. Besides, the government awarded only one 4km road project during the two months, compared to road projects of 382 km a year ago “due to the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct", the road ministry said in an office memorandum on Friday.

Building a new factory? Budget may extend concessional tax rate for a year
NEW DELHI : The Union budget in July is likely to restore the concessional 15% corporate tax rate for new manufacturing facilities, a scheme introduced in 2019 that expired on 31 March this year, two persons aware of the matter said. The plan now is to extend this scheme by one to two years to facilitate fresh manufacturing investment, which is a priority for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, one of the two persons cited above said on condition of anonymity. The Centre wants to give a strong thrust to the manufacturing sector as it could generate well-paid employment to a large number of people currently engaged in low-paid farm activities.

Local-language children’s films struggle to find viewers as Hollywood raises bar
NEW DELHI : The underwhelming performance of local-language children’s films such as Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan underscores, once again, the struggles of an underserved genre in India. Trade experts say Indian children, who now have access to Hollywood franchises like the Avengers, no longer fancy substandard fare. The genre, which saw successes such as Chota Chetan, Koi..Mil Gaya and Taare Zameen Par in the 1990s and 2000s, doesn’t command immediate draw as most Indian children watch mainstream films that parents deem appropriate for the entire family.

Exam mess casts cyber scare over education
Mumbai/New Delhi: Millions of students vying for coveted colleges and courses makes India's vast education sector a prime target for cybercrime, experts said, at a time authorities have pointed to leaked question papers appearing in the so-called dark net. Besides, data of innumerable students may also be vulnerable to unauthorized access and misuse. Amid widespread student protests over the past two weeks, the government has raced to withdraw grace marks in the pre-medical entrance exam for MBBS and related courses, cancelled an exam for junior research fellowships at universities, and postponed another exam to admit students to post-graduate medical courses.
