Meet young Yusuf Dikec: Did the Turkish Olympic 'hitman' always have the same swag? Watch the viral video
Yusuf Dikec, the Turkish shooter who has taken the Paris 2024 Olympics by storm, has a surprising secret: he didn’t always wear glasses. An old footage from the 2011 ISSF Championship reveals a sharp-eyed Dikec without his now-signature eyewear. The transformation from the bespectacled sharpshooter we know today to the focused athlete of yesteryears is intriguing. Did the glasses become a lucky charm, or perhaps a necessity over time? Regardless, the change in appearance has done little to dampen Dikec’s shooting prowess.

Enormous challenge awaits Vinesh Phogat, five more Indians chase success in Paris
Vinesh Phogat will have to shake off a tumultuous build-up to the Paris Games when she takes mat, aiming for an elusive Olympic medal, while five of her colleagues will also strive to write their own success stories at the biggest stage when the wrestling event begins here Monday. Vinesh is easily India's most accomplished woman wrestler, with two World Championships, three CWG and eight Asian Championships medals adorning her cabinet, but her previous two Olympic campaigns have ended in heartbreaks. She had returned from Rio (2016) with just a broken leg, but from Tokyo (2021), she came back with her soul scarred after a crushing defeat 'by fall' in the quarterfinals. She was accused of misconduct and suspended by the WFI for several alleged transgressions. She claimed to have endured bouts of depression, and she was not sure of returning to the mat but she did. Not only she returned but also waged a battle outside the mat when she accused the WFI chief of sexual misconduct.

How the Olympics break athletes’ bodies
BMX riders, and she can quickly recount some of her career totals: 18 world championships, two Olympic gold medals in racing (in 2012 and 2016) and one silver, in Tokyo in 2021. But Pajón, a Colombian, can also rattle off the much more painful totals of the cost of so much riding: 25 fractures, 12 screws, eight surgeries and countless tears of ligaments and tendons. The medical hardware in her left arm and knee included so much metal that she used to travel with her X-rays. Opening a door or serving a glass of water hurts. “My joints are of an 80-plus-year-old,” Pajón said with a laugh. She is 32. Pajón, who has been racing competitively since she was 4, wasn’t lamenting her injuries during a recent conversation. They are simply a fact of life for an athlete. Wear and tear naturally degrades human bodies, even the most talented ones. But performing at the elite level, especially in high-impact Olympic sports such as wrestling, rugby or gymnastics, inherently has more risks. Shoulders give out. Ligaments tear. And, for some, metal screws and titanium plates become just more hardware in the lifelong pursuit of gold, silver and bronze.
