Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 249,000 for the week ended July 27, the highest level since August last year, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 236,000 claims for the latest week. Claims have been on an upward trend since June, with part of the rise blamed on volatility related to temporary motor vehicle plant shutdowns for retooling and disruptions caused by Hurricane Beryl in Texas.

Everything is moving on expected lines and I look at the market from the prism of the US Fed. The US Fed pretty much has said what everybody was expecting, growth is decent and rate cuts will start. Mark Matthews: I did not expect them to be so overt in telling us there will be a rate cut in September. They did not need to because the market is already pricing one in. I felt that was interesting. There was no urgency in the statement or Jerome Powell's comments to the press but the most interesting thing is there was a sentence in the statement for two years saying that inflation was the most important criterion and that was replaced with the dual mandate of inflation, but also employment.

Nifty crossed the 25,000 milestone for the first time while Sensex zoomed past the 82,000 level to yet another record high. At 9:23 am, the BSE Sensex was trading 345 points, or 0.42%, higher at 82,043. The Nifty50 was up 117 points, or 0.47%, trading at 25,068.

Breakout stocks to buy or sell: Despite weak global market sentiments, the Indian stock market ended higher for the third day in a row on Wednesday. The Nifty 50 index finished 121 points higher at 24,978. The BSE Sensex scaled 285 points north and closed at 81,741, whereas the Bank Nifty index was 121 points higher at 51,620.
