IITian at RBI's helm: What awaits Sanjay Malhotra at Central bank
Shaktikanta Das, another finance ministry bureaucrat has been appointed as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra will replace Das. Economists were speculating over the future of Das in the wake of data showing the South Asian economy expanded 5.4% from July to September, a seven-quarter low and far below the Reserve Bank of India’s 7% projection, Bloomberg reported. When Shaktikanta Das joined the central bank six years ago, he had waded into a government-RBI rift. A deft bureaucrat like his predecessors Duvvuri Subbarao and YV Reddy, Das had a tough job: to clean the mess left by high-profile economists Raghuram Rajan and Urjit Patel whose tenure at the helm of the RBI was marked by spats with the government, erosion of confidence and high uncertainty. Now, when expectations for a rate cut have spiked after a long rate pause and the GDP dip, Malhotra will be heading the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) when it considers a rate cut in its February meeting.

Governor must propose President's rule in Maharashtra: Sanjay Raut
Sanjay Raut on Sunday said that Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari must propose President's rule in the state because of the «mess» over the ongoing stalemate regarding Chief Minister post in Maharashtra. He reiterated his allegations against the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). «Governor should propose the President rule here because of the mess that has happened here. This is wrong. People are watching everything. People know how the elections were conducted, EVMs main kaisi gadbadi hui (how the EVMs were hampered). We are trying to create a national movement over this,» Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut told reporters. The senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader further said that the Eknath Shinde-led state government was against the constitution. The state government remained in power only because of the Supreme Court and former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Raut said, adding that the caretaker government in Maharashtra is also against the Constitution.

Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena in a bizarre demand has asked to stay the assembly results and hold fresh elections through paper ballots. “ We have made 450 complaints against the EVM machines in these elections, the elections were conducted as per procedure. We are saying that stall these results and do the elections from paper ballots and we would win the elections. We were leading in the morning in the paper ballots in these elections early but then when the counting in the EVM happened things changed.”said Sanjay Raut Rajya Sabha MP and party spokesperson of the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena. Raut claimed that they want elections to be held through paper ballots. “We are not saying this because we lost, we have been saying against EVM for the last ten years. Now they (BJP) claim that they won in Jharkhand and lost in Maharashtra but we would like to tell them to do one thing: take Jharkhand and let us win in Maharashtra. Do something in the EVM machine and let us win in Maharashtra.”said Raut sarcastically.
