Police on high alert following communal violence in UP's Bahraich
communal violence during a Durga idol procession in Maharajganj area of Bahraich, UP police are trying to maintain peace and put a check on the possible spread of the tension in rural areas. Monday also witnessed incidents of arson and stone pelting, besides protests at a few places. Sensing the gravity of the situation, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the top officials, home secretary Sanjeev Gupta and additional director general of police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash, to camp in Bahraich to bring the situation under control. “We are trying our best to maintain peace and harmony,” UP’s additional director general of police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash told ET on phone from Bahraich.

Addressing a session on agro-processing at the 21st Indo-US Economic Summit organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), ITC Ltd's Agri-Business Division Vice President of Value Added Products Sanjeev Bisht identified key concerns, including recent Red Sea-related supply chain disruptions, the absence of a free trade agreement, and local quality norms. «If we want to increase exports, we need to understand the quality concerns of that country,» Bisht said, stressing the importance of harmonising standards between India and the US. Bisht also emphasised the need for sustainability and technology integration to boost productivity while reducing ecological impact. He suggested that combining innovations in artificial intelligence with agriculture could open new avenues for growth, an official statement said.

Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused to direct CBFC to issue a certificate as the Madhya Pradesh High Court has already ordered the Censor Board to decide the representations made by the Jabalpur Sikh Sangat, which have objected to the film and its Trailer. Further, the Bombay High Court ordered CBFC to decide the representations made by the Jabalpur Sikh Sangat or anyone else, latest by September 18. The next hearing has been scheduled for September 19. A division bench of Justices Burgess Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla heard the plea. It went through the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court after hearing the arguments of senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond appearing for Zee Studios and advocate Abhinav Chandrachud representing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

NCLT seeks Go First response on CoC decision to liquidate company
National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Tuesday issued a notice to the suspended management of grounded budget carrier Go First, seeking its response to the Committee of Creditors' (CoC) decision to liquidate the airline. The counsel for the resolution professional (RP) informed the tribunal that the CoC had passed a resolution to liquidate Go First after finding that the resolution plans received under the insolvency resolution process were non-compliant with the law. Further, the counsel said since the CoC has already infused more than ₹200 crore in the insolvency resolution process, and with no cash being generated by the airline, the CoC has approved a resolution allowing third-party funding of the arbitration proceedings that Go First has filed against US engine maker Pratt & Whitney (P&W) at the Singapore Court of Arbitration.

Logistics firm Ecom Express has filed draft papers with the market regulator for an initial public issue of shares worth nearly Rs 2,600 crore. The offer will comprise fresh shares worth Rs 1,284 crore and another Rs 1,315 crore in an offer for sale (OFS) by existing investors, the company informed the Securities and Exchange Board of India in its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP). If it gets the regulatory approval and goes ahead with the IPO, Ecom Express will become the second new-age logistics firm focused on online deliveries to be listed on the Indian public bourses, after Delhivery that listed in May 2022.

J-K Cricket Association case: HC quashes ED charge sheets against Farooq Abdullah, others
Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Wednesday quashed charge sheets filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah and others in connection with its money laundering probe linked to alleged irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). A single bench order passed by Justice Sanjeev Kumar said no predicate offence was made against the individuals and hence the charge sheet and supplementary charge sheet filed by the ED are quashed. The ED had named National Conference chief Abdullah, Ahsan Ahmad Mirza (former treasurer of JKCA), Mir Manzoor Gazanffer (another ex-treasurer of the JKCA) and some others as accused in the charge sheet.

AstraZeneca Q1 Results: Net loss reported at Rs 12 cr
Pharma India on Thursday said its net loss stood at Rs 12 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2024. The drug maker had reported a net profit of Rs 54 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. Total income stood at Rs 396 crore for the June quarter against Rs 303 crore in the year-ago period, AstraZeneca Pharma India said in a regulatory filing.

Indrani Mukerjea, accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012, to travel to Europe but laid down some conditions. The court allowed Indrani Mukerjea to travel once to Europe (Spain and United Kingdom) for ten days between intermittent period for the next three months. During her travel, she has to attend the office of the Indian Embassy or its allied diplomatic mission offices there at least once during her visit and obtain an attendance certificate, said the court. The court also directed Indrani Mukerjea to furnish a security deposit of Rs 2 lakh. Last month, the former media executive filed an application in the court seeking nod for overseas visit, claiming she needs to travel to Europe frequently for work.

cricket match-fixing scandal tainted the gentleman's game, a court here has framed charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy against four accused including Sanjeev Chawla, a London-based bookie and the «main conspirator», and actor Krishan Kumar, the brother of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar. The 68-page order by the Patiala House district court, which has now paved the way for the start of the trial, noted the alleged role of the four — Chawla, Kumar, Delhi-based bookie Rajesh Kalra and Sunil Dara alias Bittoo. Delhi Police had filed the charge sheet in 2013 against them in connection with the 2000 cricket match-fixing scandal involving late South African captain Hansie Cronje. Cronje died in a plane crash in 2002. Chawla was extradited to India in February 2020.

Enforcement Directorate has filed a charge sheet and also attached assets worth more than Rs 4 crore of former Jharkhand rural development minister Alamgir Alam, his ex personal secretary and the aide's domestic help as part of a money laundering investigation. In a statement on Saturday, the federal agency said it has issued a provisional attachment order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on July 4 against Alamgir Alam, his former PS Sanjeev Kumar Lal, Lal's wife Reeta Lal and his domestic help Jahangir Alam. The cumulative value of all these assets recorded under the attachment is Rs 4.42 crore, it said. A charge sheet against these accused, except Reeta Lal, was also filed before a special PMLA court in Ranchi on Thursday, the agency said.

CBI arrests principal, vice principal of school in Hazaribagh in NEET-UG paper leak case
CBI on Friday arrested the principal and vice principal of a school in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh in connection with the NEET-UG paper leak case, officials said. Ehsanul Haque, the principal of Oasis School, was made the city coordinator of Hazaribagh for the medical entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5, they said. Vice Principal Imtiaz Alam was designated as the NTA's observer and the centre coordinator at the Oasis School, officials said, adding the CBI is also questioning five more people from the district in connection with the paper leak case. The federal probe agency arrested Haque and Alam after detailed questioning, they said.
