BJP’s Bengal win sparks rally in state-linked stocks, but can it last?
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. The end of a 15-year political regime in West Bengal has rekindled investor interest in companies headquartered in the state, triggering a sharp rally in select stocks on expectations of a policy reset. On 4 May, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a watershed win in the 294-member assembly, unseating the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) and ending its 15-year rule.On the back of expectations of improved industrial policy clarity and faster clearances, shares of RP Sanjiv Goenka Group companies, Bandhan Bank, Emami Limited and others saw a sharp move in prices. However, analysts caution that the rally reflects anticipatory positioning rather than earnings visibility.“The market is largely anticipatory positioning, not earnings-led yet,” said Ajay Bagga, a market expert. “Any regime shift that improves industrial policy clarity and capex visibility can expand earnings multiples but sustainability depends entirely on execution, not sentiment,” Bagga added.Shares of Kolkata-based Bandhan Bank touched an all-time high of ₹212.5 on Monday, emerging as the top gainer in the Nifty Private Bank pack that day.As of FY26, West Bengal accounted for 24% of Bandhan Bank’s total loans and advances—the highest among all states.

SC raps WB school service commission, says intentionally covered up lapses
West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) saying it «intentionally» covered up the lapses and illegalities in the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers in state-run and state-aided schools. The scathing remarks came from a bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar in its judgement by which it annulled the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers. Authoring the judgement, the CJI said despite the factual background and the credible evidence indicating irregularities the «WBSSC initially did try and cover up the lapses and illegalities». The CJI went on, «The cover up itself has made the verification and ascertainment more difficult or rather impossible given the scale of camouflage and dressing up done at each stage. We are convinced that the entire selection process was intentionally compromised due to the illegalities involved.» The top court upheld the Calcutta High Court's findings on illegalities in the selection process on 17 counts. The high court said OMR sheets were destroyed without the scanned mirror images being preserved on the commission's server.

AI to have big impact on entire chain of investing, says former HUL MD Sanjiv Mehta
L Catterton India and former Managing Director HUL, Sanjiv Mehta said on Saturday. He also said that the India-focussed joint venture that he formed with global investment firm L Catterton's Asian arm to develop a new investment vehicle is primarily focused on consumers, which is his «sweet spot… „If you look at the investment journey, this entire private equity journey, it starts with identifying where you want to invest. Then you look at identifying what could be your potential investment in a portfolio company. Then you decide the timing of investment and how much to invest. Then it is the classical creation of value. And the value is what I described, how technology will reshape value creation,“ Mehta said at the Mumbai Tech Week, which concluded here on Saturday. Noting that the last thing is determining when to exit, he said that's the whole value chain of private equity.

90-hr workweek: ITC chairman says flexibility, employee empowerment more important
90-hour workweek controversy, ITC Ltd Chairman Sanjiv Puri said empowering employees to realise their potential and accomplish their jobs well was more important than the number of hours put in. «We would not do that,» he said on not asking employees to put in a particular number of hours at work. We would rather like people to be part of the journey (of the company) and feel passionately involved and kind of feel the urge amongst themselves to make a difference to the enterprise. That's how we look at it".
