Nokia April-June sales drop after record 2023, pins hope on Vi deal
Nokia's sales in India continued to plunge in the second quarter of the 2024 calendar year, in line with rival Ericsson reporting a similar fall a few days back, with their big telco clients Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel cutting down on network capex spends having concluded their pan-India 5G rollouts. Industry executives and analysts say Finland's Nokia and Sweden's Ericsson will now have to rely on fresh 4G and 5G gear supply deals with Vodafone Idea (Vi) to revive their plunging sales in India, and support global growth. On Thursday, Nokia posted a steep 68% Year-on-Year (YoY) fall in India net sales to ₹3,007.3 crore in Q2, 2024, while Sweden's Ericsson reported a 44% YoY slide in sales in its Southeast Asia, Oceania and India market to ₹6,093 crore approx) in Q2, 2024. Ericsson does not reveal India-specific sales numbers.

Pakistan's gender gap index hits rock bottom, second worst globally
Global Gender Gap Index by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Pakistan finds itself near the bottom of the list, with only Sudan ranked lower among 146 nations surveyed. This marks a further decline from its 142nd position last year, reflecting a worsening situation for women in the country, Dawn reported. Women's rights activists have issued impassioned pleas for both state and societal commitment to address gender disparities effectively. They emphasise the need to redefine the roles prescribed to women by Pakistsociety and the government. The annual index evaluates gender parity across four critical dimensions: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. Leading nations in gender parity include Iceland, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden, as reported by Dawn.

Neeraj Chopra opts out of Paris Diamond League: Report
javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra has opted out of this Sunday's Paris Diamond League, citing the adductor niggle that has been troubling him for the past couple of months, according to a report. Speaking to 'ESPN', Chopra said he is focussing on training and strengthening his blocking leg. «I need to strengthen my blocking leg when I throw because that's when my groin gets pulled. We're working on that to see how we can reduce the impact on the groin and control the pressure on it,» he said, explaining the issue for which he will consult «different doctors» after the Paris Games. «I could have competed in more events for sure and that was the plan. But I have realised that my health is paramount, that comes first. Even if I feel the slightest discomfort or like I am pushing myself too much in training, I've learnt to pause for a bit,» he added.

Vi completes minimum 5G rollout requirements
Vodafone Idea (Vi) Friday said it has completed minimum rollout obligations for commencing 5G services in its 17 circles, for which the company had acquired spectrum in August, 2022. The companies buying spectrum in an auction need to roll out network and offer services to a certain level to meet the minimum standards. Vi’s bigger rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel has far exceeded the minimum requirements as both the telcos have almost completed their pan-India 5G rollout. But loss-making Vi is yet to announce its 5G roll out plans, due its strained cash position.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Uday Kotak on Vodafone Idea's deal with Nokia and Ericsson
Vodafone Idea, billionaire banker Uday Kotak on Friday questioned the debt-ridden telecom operator's decision to settle dues of two European equipment vendors — Nokia and Ericsson — by issuing preferential shares. He indirectly compared the deal with the age-old proverb «robbing Peter to pay Paul». «Financial markets create money out of thin air? A model for companies in financial difficulty: issue equity to creditors to repay their debt. If the stock is well traded, the creditor can sell in the market and get paid by investors. What is that story about Peter and Paul?,» Kotak said on social media platform X without naming Vodafone Idea.

Vodafone Idea prefers stock as payment for Nokia and Ericsson bills
Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) plans to raise up to Rs 2,458 crore through a preferential share issue to its two European equipment vendors Nokia and Ericsson, clearing a part of their pending dues and setting the stage for the struggling telco’s 4G expansion and 5G rollout. The board of directors of VIL approved a preferential allotment of 1.66 billion equity shares at Rs 14.80 per share to Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson, for a total of up to Rs 2,458 crore, the company said in a statement Thursday. Nokia will invest up to Rs 1,520 crore and Ericsson up to Rs 938 crore. The issue price is 35% higher than that in the April follow-on offer (FPO) of Rs 11 a share and comes with a lock-in period of six months.
