As usual, the medal tally at the Olympic games was lopsided
AFTER A FORTNIGHT featuring 329 competitions, the battle for Olympic supremacy came down to the last event on the final day of the Paris games. When America’s women’s basketball team beat France’s in the final on August 11th, they also helped their country equal China’s tally of 40 golds at these games. As a result, America retained its position at the summit of the official medal table—which ranks countries based on the number of golds they win—thanks to a greater haul of silvers (44 compared with China’s 27).

View: Medals tally with nations?
Olympics reading the US, China, Japan, Australia, France, the Netherlands, Britain, South Korea, Italy and Germany, one is bound to ask: why do some countries fare better than others? Discussions usually attribute wins and losses to individual abilities, training and dedication. These factors are undoubtedly crucial. But there could be other determinants like economic prosperity. In each of the last three Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the top 10 medal-winning countries have been high-income countries based on World Bank's income-level classifications, with the exception of China (upper-middle income) in Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia — upper-middle income) in PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. However, research has found a range of determinants beyond economic prosperity — team size, growth rate, expenditure on health, population, etc — to have a significant impact. We investigated the association between the total medal count for each country at the Beijing 2022 Olympics and their GDP per capita (PPP). A moderate positive relationship is observed with a correlation coefficient of 0.62.

SpiceJet's engine lessors reject promoter Ajay Singh's offer to pledge personal shares towards airline's liability
SpiceJet seems to be mounting as its engine lessors — Team France 01 SAS and Sunbird France 02 SAS — on Monday rejected its promoter Ajay Singh’s offer to pledge his personal shares, equivalent to the outstanding dues of $2.5 million, towards discharge of the airline’s liability. Senior counsel, Sandeep Sethi, appearing for Spicejet, told the Delhi High Court that Singh is willing to pledge his unencumbered shares towards discharge of the airline’s liability with the HC and the same can be encashed if it failed to pay till September 30. “We are not putting any conditions. The court can pass orders for immediate release if we don’t pay between now and September 30,” he argued. However, the lessors rejected the offer, saying they don’t want “pledge of shares of a company whose existence is shaky…The pledge is not acceptable. We have given them a long leash. We want our engines back. And we have been asking for disclosure of Singh’s assets since January,” senior counsel Raj Shekar Rao told a Bench of Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora.

Paris is closing out the 2024 Olympics with a final star-studded show
Los Angeles in 2028. Speculation was rife that Hollywood star Tom Cruise — seen around town during the final weekend — would feature in the closing ceremony that unlike the rain-drenched July 26 opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Games, basked in sunny, hot weather. For now, French swimmer Leon Marchand started the Olympic flame's journey to the Stade de France. For Los Angeles, topping Paris could be mission impossible. The French capital made spectacular use of its cityscape for its first Games in 100 years. The Eiffel Tower and other iconic monuments became Olympic stars in their own right, serving as backdrops and in some cases venues for competitions.

Canada’s Phil (Wizard) Kim wins gold in breaking
PARIS – Phil Kim was the first, and for the foreseeable future, the only Olympic champion in men’s breaking. The 27-year-old from Vancouver, known in his breaking circles as B-Boy Phil Wizard, captured gold at Place de la Concorde on Saturday. The Canadian dominated his final battle with host-country favourite Danis Civil (Dany Dann) of France by winning all three rounds and taking 23 of a possible 27 votes from the judges. The 2022 world champion and reigning Pan American Games champion Kim was a favourite in the performance sport making its Olympic debut in Paris. It isn’t on the menu in Los Angeles in 2028 nor is it certain to return in Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.The sunny, charismatic Kim was that throughout his bouts Saturday, but he shed tears both on the podium during O Canada, in interviews afterward and when he embraced his mother Gilsoo, father Byung Tae and brothers Daniel and John.“I was stressed out of my mind,” Kim said. “Yesterday, I cried my eyes out because I was so scared to do this.“There’s been a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations.

Cool putter proves costly for Canada’s Henderson
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France – Canada’s Brooke Henderson stood by the side of the 14th green at Le Golf National on Saturday and practised her putting motion several times before walking to the next hole. She never did regain her touch on the greens after a 67 a day earlier gave her an outside shot at a medal.Henderson threatened midway through the final round after reeling off three straight birdies, but her putter didn’t co-operate when she needed it.“I gave myself a lot of good opportunities,” Henderson said. “I feel like if I had made two or three different putts throughout the round then I feel like the momentum would have been more in my favour.“It might be a different story standing here.

Why have European car makers struggled to succeed in India?
Opel Astra? It was India’s first tryst with German technology on the roads. With automatic transmission — a rarity in those days — ventilated disc brakes and a CFC-free air-conditioning system, Astra quickly became the car to dream for. It single-handedly launched the premium luxury sedan segment in India. Opel, then owned by Detroit, US-based auto major General Motors, doubled down, launching Corsa with an ad campaign that auto enthusiasts still remember—“Achtung Baby”—flaunting its German origins. The Opel cars scored high on product satisfaction, but the sheen wore off quickly, thanks to expensive maintenance and sub-par after-sales experience, all of which affected the resale value. Opel exited India in 2006, 10 years after its entry. French manufacturer Peugeot was another early mover in the 1990s and launched the 309 —a boxy sedan with 80s design language—in India. Not even the choice of the TUD5 engine, a legendary motor, could save the Parisian car maker. You would think that after initial hiccups, things would have become different in the new millennium and the Europeans would have made the most of their early-mover advantage. But that was not to be.
