GenAI levels the playing field: Mercedes Soria of robotics security company Knightscope
artificial intelligence can enable Indians — even those who do not have a technical background — to solve the country’s most pressing problems, according to Mercedes Soria, executive vice-president and chief intelligence officer at US robotics security company Knightscope. “Now, all we have to worry about is, are we solving the right problem,” said Soria, who was on an India visit to share her expertise on machine learning and AI. Soria is a speaker for the United States Department of State on technology and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). “In the future, it’s not going to be so much that you have to be technical to have a startup and solve a problem. It’s going to be more of, do you identify the right problem to solve, and then the technology like Gen AI will help you,” she said. Problems can be solved even by those who can’t write a single line of code, she added. This is a ‘massive opportunity’ for India with its large population and unique local issues. Young people in India, including high schoolers, are very familiar with and using tools like ChatGPT, whereas in the US this is seen more among those in university, Soria noted.

Pakistan invites PM Modi for SCO meet in October, but Islamabad visit unlikely amid tensions
Pakistan has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), for the upcoming Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting in October this year, reported The Times of India. However, it is unlikely that Modi will visit Islamabad, though it remains to be seen if he will delegate a minister to represent India, as has been done in the past, considering the strained relations between the two nations, the report added. Pakistan is set to host the CHG meeting on October 15-16, as it currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the council, the second most important decision-making body within the SCO, following the Council of Heads of State. While Modi regularly attends the heads of state summits, he skipped the recent one in Kazakhstan due to a scheduling conflict with a Parliament session in early July.

Moonshot boom: behind spurred investment in India’s thriving space sector
Chandrayaan-3’s historic landing near the Moon’s south pole, solidifying India’s status as a leading spacefaring nation. This achievement has transformed global perceptions, but also spurred significant investment in India’s thriving space sector. Suraksha P examines the current investment trends and developments. Did Chandrayaan-3’s success attract investments for the Indian space sector? “The government had already laid the groundwork through policy reforms and the creation of IN-SPACe to actively encourage private sector participation. However, Chandrayaan-3 provided a decisive push that captured the world’s attention, significantly amplifying investor interest in the rapidly growing space sector,” Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe.

Russia oil trade kept global prices stable, says India
Volodymyr Zelenskyy's comments on India's crude oil trade with Russia may not have been in the right spirit, coming hours after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kyiv during which New Delhi explained the market rationale for oil imports given its substantial requirements. Emphasising on India's «global influence», Zelenskyy suggested that India can help end Moscow's war in Ukraine by halting the oil trade that significantly funds the Russian military. «You can stop Vladimir Putin and halt his economy, and put him really in his place,» Zelenskyy told members of the Indian media on Friday night in Kyiv, referring to his meeting with Modi earlier in the day.

Paralympic Games: India have sent an 84-strong contingent, the biggest ever
Paris will again be the centre of attention when the City of Lights hosts the 17 h Paralympic Games. India have sent 84 para-athletes, who will be aiming for the country’s highest-ever medal haul at the Paralympics. India won a solitary medal in London 2012, a number that went up to 4 in 2016 Rio and 19 in 2021 Tokyo. If the athletes perform to potential, it could cross 25 in Paris. For the record, India’s cumulative medals tally between 1968, when it first participated at the Paralympics, and 2016, was 12. But then numbers don’t tell half the story. In Rio, for example, India had sent just 19 athletes. In Tokyo, the number swelled to 54. In Paris, India is sending its largest ever Paralympics contingent.
