India plans tougher ad curbs on liquor makers such as Carlsberg, Diageo, Pernod
liquor, is set to announce sweeping rules that will bar even surrogate ads and sponsoring of events, which could force firms such as Carlsberg, Pernod Ricard and Diageo to redraw marketing campaigns. Such «surrogate ads» often get round the ban by ostensibly showing less desirable items instead, such as water, music CDs or glassware garbed in logos and hues linked to their key product, and often promoted by popular Bollywood film stars. Now they could bring fines for companies and bans for celebrities endorsing tobacco and liquor ads deemed misleading, according to the top civil servant for consumer affairs and draft rules being reported for the first time by Reuters.

Pilots' grouping flags pilot fatigue; urges govt to implement revised flight duty norms
pilot fatigue, pilots' grouping FIP has urged the civil aviation ministry to take steps for implementation of revised norms on flight duty and rest period at the earliest. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP), which has more than 6,000 members, had earlier also written to the civil aviation ministry on the revised CAR (Civil Aviation Requirement) for pilots after DGCA postponed their implementation. The revised CAR related to flight duty time limitation seeks to provide more rest time for pilots amid rising concerns over pilot fatigue. In March, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) decided to postpone its implementation. In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, FIP President CS Randhawa has requested him to direct DGCA to implement the revised CAR at the earliest.

India's journey from food scarcity to surplus: Empowering global nutrition solutions through innovation
digital technology and the most modern methods to help find solutions to global food and nutrition challenges today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists here on Saturday. “Agriculture is at the centre of our economic policy”, he said and credited farmers having small landholdings – who constitute 90% of people engaged in agriculture in India – for making the country self-sufficient and providing “superfoods” like millets to the world. Modi recalled that when India became independent from colonial rule, its food security was a matter of concern for the world.

Tilak: The Empire’s Biggest Enemy, in a sense, completes the triumvirate of the three interrelated historical legacies that have shaped modern Maharashtra and dramatically impacted national life. Olympics 2024: Manu misses history
Manu Bhaker and Jaspal Rana, the pupil and the teacher, are likely to agree given how their reunion has turned out to be. Bhaker, who had already won two bronze medals, narrowly missed out on a historic treble at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. In a high-quality final, Bhaker gave it her all and was placed No.1 among eight shooters for a brief period. However, she could not maintain her consistency and eventually finished fourth after losing a bronze medal shootoff against Hungarian Veronika Major in the women’s 25m sports pistol event. The 22-year-old shot 28 in the final to be tied at third place. In the tiebreaker, she missed two of the five shots to aggregate three points, while opponent got four shots on the target to clinch the third spot. All this seems like a dream after what happened in Tokyo three years ago.

You can’t stop a landslide, the only thing you can do is save lives: M Rajeevan
landslides in the early hours of July 30 in Wayanad will go down in Kerala’s history as one of the worst natural disasters the state has faced. It’s a calamity that has claimed over 200 lives, as per official data on Saturday morning, with the final figure expected to be much higher, razed homes and traumatised a society that still carries the scars of past disasters. In the aftermath of the tragedy, as a political blame game ensues between the Centre and the state, one of the immediate questions is to what extent the landslides could have been predicted and their effects mitigated. The other is, what can we do to contain the damage to life when—and not if—such phenomena recur, with climate change and human intervention exacerbating disasters? While landslides are very tricky to predict, it can be done as some other countries have shown, says M Rajeevan. The vice-chancellor of Atria University, Bengaluru, he is former secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences and former director of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. In an interview with Indulekha Aravind, he says, “It’s not an easy problem to solve, but if we don’t do it, who will?” Edited excerpts:

shooting contingent's biggest-ever medal haul at the Olympics here, after drawing a blank in the previous two editions in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, definitely calls for celebration but the fraternity is treading cautiously with an eye already on the 2028 Los Angeles Games. All of India's medal at the Paris Olympics have come via shooting thus far and there is a slight possibility of increasing the medal count to four by the time the competition ends on Monday. The squad has also overcome the mental barrier that prevented Manu Bhaker and Co from excelling on the biggest stage. The highlight of the campaign has been Manu's two medals, the second one shared with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m pistol mixed team.
