Will Nifty touch 24,000 this week? Top 5 factors at play
Nifty remains locked within a narrow range of 23,200-23,500. If it breaks out above 23,600, the index can rally as much as 24,000 depending on news flow around the upcoming Union Budget and 100-day plans by various ministries. However, recent movements in Nifty suggest a time-based correction. «A near-term consolidation seems probable as domestic investors await cues from the upcoming union budget. There is a growing opinion that the government could place emphasis on welfare, giving a fillip to consumption-led stocks,» said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

Boost for Hyundai Motor export plans, as auto co plans to launch slew of EVs over next 4 years
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) will drive parent Hyundai Motor's ambitious strategy to make India a key export hub to expand its global business, besides seeking gains in the domestic market, said senior industry executives with knowledge of the matter. As part of this, the company plans to introduce nearly half a dozen electric vehicles over the next four years for local sales and exports, as more assembly lines come on stream in India. «Hyundai has been constrained by capacity the last couple of years,» said one of the persons cited. «The company has already enhanced capacity at its manufacturing plant in Chennai to 820,000 units per annum to meet domestic demand. With fresh capacity coming in from Talegaon in 2025, Hyundai is looking at ramping up exports from India which have been received well in markets in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.» HMIL's revenue from exports rose 83% to ₹14,120.92 crore in the last three years, despite geopolitical uncertainties. Revenue from operations in the local market rose 39% to ₹33,274.83 in the same period. As much as 23.4% of the company's total revenue came from the sale of vehicles and parts overseas in FY23. In volume terms, exports accounted for about 21% of total vehicle sales in that fiscal year.

As Indians acquire healthier tastes, food companies pack it in
low-salt, low-sugar and nutrition-fortified packaged food with sales of such products having risen in the last five years, according to the latest data from companies, market researchers and the government. This reflects an uptick in healthy eating trends as well as packaged food companies working on improving taste, the reason why sales of such items had failed to gain traction initially. Data show urban India is leading the shift toward healthier food, even though it has also picked up pace in rural areas, where household expenditure on staples such as salt, sugar and edible oil has come down. High levels of sugar, salt and fat in processed goods are seen as a concern amid rising diabetes, obesity and cardiac issues in India and elsewhere. PepsiCo's bottling and distribution company Varun Beverages told analysts last month that 46% of its consolidated sales volumes comes from low-sugar or no-sugar products, which aligns with consumer trends.

The make-up reality: East India eyes it, faces it, nails it
India accounted for over a third of all cosmetics sold in India in FY24, despite having less than a quarter of the country's households, with companies saying the region is a hotspot for most of its launches and product innovation. Global consumer researcher Kantar said in its latest report that more than 186 million pieces of cosmetics — including lipsticks, nail polish and eyeliners — were sold in the past year in top 10 Indian cities. «Average makeup usage per person is higher in the east; women in the region like wearing makeup more than any other part of the country. For us, usage is significantly higher in the north too,» said Samir K Modi, managing director, Modi Enterprises, which sells Colorbar brand. «Unlike other markets, where people tend to stick to fewer shades, the eastern region consumes a lot of different shades, even darker ones generally not sold much elsewhere.» Within cosmetics, lip products are the biggest, with 65 million units sold annually, generating close to Rs 1,700 crore revenue in FY24. Face and lip cosmetics together generate close to Rs 2,900 crore, or about 70% of industry value. While 47 million nail cosmetics are purchased annually, their relatively lower cost means they generate about Rs 350 crore. Eye products are the smallest colour cosmetic segment in the country by number of units — sold at 34 million.

Pay gap shrinks: Will BTech grads stay MBA course?
BTech graduates in India have narrowed sharply over the years, according to the findings of a Deloitte survey. This could potentially lessen the lure of opting for costly management courses after completing BTech. The pay gap between MBA and BTech graduate salaries has nearly halved to 57% in 2024 from 102% in 2021, according to Deloitte's Campus Workforce Trends 2024 study shared exclusively with ET. «This is without accounting for the investment of time and money,» said Neelesh Gupta, partner at Deloitte.

Bharat Bio's Rotavirus vaccine Rotovac may be unsafe for children: Study
Bharat Biotech's indigenous rotavirus vaccine Rotovac used in the government's immunisation programme increases the risk of intussusception in infants, a new study found. Intussusception is a condition where the intestine telescopes into itself and can lead to gangrene of the bowel or death if not treated immediately. The study has been published in the International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine. Bharat Biotech has dismissed the findings claiming the vaccine has been evaluated for safety. The study, co-authored by Jacob Puliyel, MD of the International Institute of Health Management Research, India, and Brian Hooker, chief scientific officer, Children's Health Defense, found that there was a 1.6-fold increase in the risk of intussusception in the vaccinated, which was missed in the earlier analysis.

Will World War 3 begin next week as predicted by 'new Nostradamus'? Who is he? Know what real Nostradamus has said
World War 3 begin next week? A week after observing the 80th anniversary of D-Day when the Allied forces had landed at Normandy in World War 2, will another internecine war erupt soon? This question looms over world leaders, defense experts, historians as well as astrologers. All eyes are set on Indian astronomer Kushal Kumar, who predicted the beginning of Word War 3 on June 18, 2024. Dubbed as 'new Nostradamus', he told the 'Daily Star', «NOW, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 has the strongest planetary stimulus to trigger WW3.» Earlier, he predicted the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash last month. In a post on 'The Medium', Kumar, cited a recent terror attack on Hindu pilgrims in the Indian administered state of Kashmir. He has also talked about the shots fired at the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. The 'new Nostradamus' has also talked about the escalation of tension and conflict between Israel and the Islamist militant organization Hezbollah, after the Lebanon-based outfit fired rockets at the Jewish state.

When a desi gets lost in McBritain's
Britain, our destination. Similar gaffes have occurred in the past. In the 15th century, Christopher Columbus landed in what he thought was India, but it was America. This case of mistaken identity caused the Italian navigator to call the local inhabitants 'Indios', Indians, an appellation that would be used for centuries to refer to indigenous Americans. What I was wondering on the long ride from the airport to the city was where the dickens I'd landed. Because London seemed transformed by some wave of a Hogwarts wand into an ersatz America.
