When chess champions Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh Dommaraju danced their hearts out at grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi’s wedding. Videos go viral
chess grandmasters gather under one roof—at a wedding, no less? Naturally, the board is set for celebration, not competition. On April 2, GM Vidit Gujrathi tied the knot with Nidhi Kataria at the picturesque Oxford Golf Resort in Pune, India. Vidit, currently ranked 25th in the world on the live rating list, is one of India’s most prominent chess players, while Nidhi, 28, is a practicing homeopathic doctor. The couple announced their engagement last November, and their wedding has since been one of the most eagerly awaited events in the chess community. However, it was World Champions Viswanathan Anand and Gukesh Dommaraju who took the internet by storm with their moves. A host of grandmasters and top chess players, including 15th World Champion Viswanathan Anand and the newly crowned 18th World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, brought their energy off the board and onto the dance floor. As seen in the video below, the baraat — Vidit’s celebratory wedding procession — turned into a vibrant celebration where strategy gave way to spirited moves. With a combined Elo that would rival any elite tournament, it was a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of chess royalty in full festive swing.

Tariffs stir talks: India, Vietnam and Israel hustle for deals with team Trump
These negotiations come just days after the US imposed a series of new tariffs affecting several nations, including a levy of 26% on India. According to Reuters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the levies with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A State Department readout of their meeting confirmed that the tariff discussions are part of a broader diplomatic effort. The talks are centered on a relatively small subset of the countries impacted by the new tariffs, with both parties looking to strike deals. This is seen as the first phase of a larger set of negotiations, as countries begin to assess their next steps and responses to the tariff changes. On Friday, Vietnam, which is facing a 46% tariff on its exports to the US, announced that it intends to reduce its tariffs on US goods to zero, pending an agreement with the US.

Kerala: Muslim League expresses displeasure over Priyanka Gandhi's absence during Waqf Bill debate
Indian Union Muslim League has expressed dissatisfaction over Wayanad MP and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi's absence during the discussion of the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament. Suprabhatham, the mouthpiece of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama, criticised Priyanka Gandhi for not attending the session while the bill was being debated in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The editorial, published on April 4, called her absence a «Black Mark» and also raised questions about where Priyanka Gandhi was when the BJP was advancing the bill, which they believe undermines the fundamental rights of Muslims. Additionally, it questioned why the opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, did not speak on the bill, which they claim affects the nation's unity. The editorial further acknowledged the opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, and Left, for their collective stand against the bill in Parliament under the INDIA alliance.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant and bowler Digvesh Singh have both been penalised following LSG’s IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Pant has been fined INR 12 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate during the match, marking his first offence under the IPL’s Code of Conduct. According to Article 2.22 of the Code, which deals with minimum over-rate offences, captains are held responsible when their teams fail to bowl their allotted overs within the prescribed time limit. Additionally, Digvesh Singh has been fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. This fine follows his second Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season. Singh had previously accumulated one demerit point in LSG’s match against Punjab Kings on April 1, 2025, bringing his total to two demerit points after this latest breach. For both players, the decisions made by the Match Referee are final and binding as per IPL regulations.

Bengaluru and Pune property prices are in danger due to Trump tariff fallout, CA warns
recession — a threat that could hit India where it hurts most: its tech-driven cities. As American companies rein in spending, Indian IT firms are grappling with slower project cycles and shrinking revenues. The impact is already visible, with the Nifty IT index plunging 9% this week — its biggest weekly drop in five years — sparking concerns that a downturn in the US could derail the ongoing recovery in technology spending. Experts warn that India cannot remain immune to global economic shocks. Chartered accountant Paaras Gangwal highlighted on X (formerly Twitter) that a US recession may trigger a domino effect, especially in IT hubs like Bengaluru and Pune. He pointed out that the real estate boom in these cities has been fuelled by IT growth, making them vulnerable to global tech disruptions. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CA Paaras Gangwal wrote, “Bangalore, Pune Real Estate Market is linked with IT Sector. It is HOT because boom in the IT Sector in last 3-4 Year. Recession in USA may impact the Real Estate market of IT Cities too.”

Trump tariff hunt eyes India's last stock market refuge but it won't be an easy kill
Donald Trump’s tariff tantrums on April 2, are now nursing their wounds. The Nifty Pharma index tumbled 4% on Friday, slamming the brakes on a relief rally that lasted less than 24 hours. Investors who had rushed into stocks like Laurus Labs, Aurobindo Pharma, Lupin, Biocon, Gland Pharma and Cipla watched them fall between 5% and 7% in a single session. The shock came courtesy of Trump’s chilling declaration: Pharma tariffs are “going to be starting to come in… at a level that you haven't really seen before.” The announcement, he said, is “under review right now” and will be made “in the near future.”

Myanmar earthquake death toll at 3,354, junta leader returns from summit
death toll from Myanmar's devastating earthquake climbed to 3,354, with 4,850 injured and 220 missing, state media said on Saturday, as the visiting U.N. aid chief praised humanitarian and community groups for leading the aid response. The leader of the military government, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, was back in the capital Naypyitaw after a rare foreign trip to attend a summit in Bangkok of South and Southeast Asian nations, where he also met separately with the leaders of Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and India. Min Aung Hlaing reaffirmed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the junta's plans to hold «free and fair» elections in December, Myanmar state media said. Modi called for a post-quake ceasefire in Myanmar's civil war to be made permanent, and said the elections needed to be «inclusive and credible», an Indian foreign affairs spokesperson said on Friday. Critics have derided the planned election as a sham to keep the generals in power through proxies.

Rashmika Mandanna fans are happy with this photo. But one person is not
Rashmika Mandanna, one of India's most adored actresses, turned 29 today and took to Instagram to share sun-soaked photos from her trip to Salalah, Oman. While fans couldn’t stop gushing over her radiant snaps, there was one person who wasn’t exactly thrilled — her fitness trainer. In the photos, Rashmika is seen enjoying a serene moment at a table loaded with delicious food, dressed in a chic sleeveless black tank top paired with denim jeans and a wide-brimmed hat. Flashing her trademark smile and signature heart-fingers gesture, the actress looks every bit the happy traveler soaking in Salalah’s beauty. But not everyone is pleased with her indulgence. In the caption, Rashmika cheekily wrote, “Good food + full almost exploding happy tummy = angry Junaid Shaikh and Sagar (my trainers). I read this somewhere. Salalah — land of sun, sand and smiles. How cute it sounds!”

Donald Trump, tariffs and China's counter punch: Anand Mahindra urges India to grab this opportunity
trade tariffs, industrialist Anand Mahindra believes India is being overlooked — and that could be a big mistake. On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on global trade partners, including a 34% duty on Chinese goods. In response, China hit back with a 34% tariff on all imports from the U.S., escalating fears of a prolonged trade war. While the spotlight has largely remained on China, the U.S. also slapped a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, citing high import duties imposed by New Delhi. Amid this global shake-up, Mahindra sees an opening for India. Taking to X, the Mahindra Group Chairman said that while most global forums are focused on how China may benefit or retaliate, India remains a “non-topic of discussion." However, he argued that India is poised to become the world’s third-largest economy and, as the world’s largest democracy, is uniquely positioned thanks to its vast domestic consumption and strong supply chains. Mahindra also called for a “measured reaction” to tariffs, urging India to adopt smart policies that help it emerge as the world’s most reliable economic partner — and a key pillar in a new, multipolar global order.

PM Modi’s Act East Policy places India as an active stakeholder in regional affairs
Act East Policy is the reflection of PM Narendra Modi’s foreign policy marked by dynamism and action. With the changing dynamics of the world, PM Modi in 2014, introduced a new vigour in India’s foreign policy. He transformed the Look East Policywith a more dynamic Act East Policy (AEP). Introduced in 1992, the Look East policy focused largely on economic ties with the Southeast Asia region. This shift was not just symbolic but marked a significant strategic approach that emphasized deeper diplomatic engagement, stronger trade partnerships, enhanced security cooperation, and cultural exchanges with Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. The Act East Policy placed India as an active stakeholder in regional affairs. Over the past 10 years, the Act East Policy has positioned India as an active and influential player in Southeast Asia. The Indian PM’s frequent engagements, high-profile summits, and strategic partnerships have strengthened India's presence in the Indo-Pacific, making India not just a participant but a leader in regional affairs. Modi has himself visited SE Asia multiple times. This include trips to Singapore (2015, 2018, 2024), which have strengthened economic and fintech collaboration, and visits to Indonesia (2018, 2022, 2023), where India expanded its maritime security cooperation.
