Nostalgic Shubman Gill savours return to Gabba after 2021 heroics
Gabba pitch is among the toughest assignments a touring batter can face but India's Shubman Gill will approach the task with a clear head in the third test starting on Saturday. Nearly four years ago, the Gabba was the proving ground for Gill's test career in the deciding fourth match of the 2020-21 series. A callow, 21-year-old opener playing in just his third test, Gill scored a brave 91 as an injury-depleted India chased down a record 328-run target for victory and sealed the series 2-1.

Priyanka Gandhi attacks govt over Sambhal, Manipur
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on PM Modi-led government at the Centre in her maiden speech saying that the government has not understood that 'Bharat ka Samvidhan' (India's Constitution) is not 'Sangh ka Vidhan' (law of the RSS). Speaking for almost 32 minutes in Hindi, Vadra talked about the violence in Sambhal and her meetings with rape victims in Agra and Unnao. She also talked about her meeting with victims of the landslide in Wayanad. The first speaker from the Opposition side to speak on the debate on the 75 years journey of the Constitution, she began her speech by outlining the significance of the Constitution and paying tributes to those who laid down their lives in the Parliament attack on December 13, 2001.

As befits a high-flying India: It is natural for Indians to expect that Air India will become world class again—as soon as possible!
Air India aircraft, evocatively named the Emperor Ashoka, way back in 1972. Needless to add it left a deep impression on my six-year-old mind, not only because of the dimension of a Boeing 747 ('Jumbo') but the regal ambience, the glamorous, poised cabin crew, and even the food.

PV wholesale dispatches move up after retail slowdown in November
Passenger vehicle wholesales rose 4% year-on-year in November while retail sales fell 14%, reflecting rising dealer stocks. While carmakers say inventory in the sales channel is healthy at about a month, dealers claim it is much higher at 65-68 days. Carmakers report wholesales or factory dispatches to dealerships every month, collated and reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) separately issues monthly vehicle registration data compiled from the Vahan portal of the ministry of road, transport & highways (MoRTH), which shows final sales to customers. As many as 347,552 cars, sedans and utility vehicles were sold in the local market last month, a 4.1% increase from 333,833 units sold in the same period last year, showed data issued by Siam. Retail sales of passenger vehicles had, however, fallen by 14% on-year in November.

In reply to ECI, it is BJP's 'quota bias' vs Congress' 'malicious' complaints
Election Commission of India notice on the Congress complaints against Union home minister Amit Shah's campaign speeches during the Maharashtra and Jharkhand polls, the BJP has cited Jawaharlal Nehru's letters to chief ministers on reservations besides Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi-led governments sitting on Mandal Commission reports. It has argued that the BJP is «duty bound to set the record straight by calling the Opposition's bluff,» ET has learnt. The Congress, which also earned an ECI notice for BJP complaints against Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's speeches, has defended its leader, citing a series of news reports as the basis for his comments and termed BJP's complaints as «false, malicious and defamatory.» ET gathers that the ECI is seized of both communications but is yet to take a final view on the matter. Faced with complaints from both BJP and Congress for alleged violation of the model code of conduct by top leaders of BJP and Congress, Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi, respectively, the poll panel had sent notices to their party presidents — BJP's JP Nadda and Congress' Mallikarjun Kharge on November 16.

Diluting the Wildlife (Protection) Act for rhesus macaques will be devastating for this Indian species
International Monkey Day today. For the last half-century, the rhesus macaque, or the rhesus monkey, revered in Hinduism as earthly representation of Hanuman, was protected under India law. It protected them from being killed or captured for experimentation, meat, or being used in pet industries, among other forms of abuse. Now, inexplicably, those protections have been weakened. GoI must reverse this egregious betrayal of these keenly intelligent and complex animals. Distinctly social beings, rhesus macaques thrive in large, active groups. They are highly vocal and communicate using body postures, facial expressions, vocalisations and scent cues. Rhesus macaques feel joy and sadness, love and fear. In their natural habitat, monkeys can be playful and silly, but also determined and loyal. These primates love to climb and swim. Mothers nurse their young ones for up to a year. Rhesus macaques also play an important environmental role. Since fruit is an important part of their diet, they disperse fruit seeds over large distances, maintaining tropical forests and plants, and strengthening and balancing local ecosystems.

Bleeding Constitution from a thousand cuts: Mahua Moitra slams govt
Mahua Moitra accused the BJP-led Centre on Friday of «bleeding the Constitution from a thousand cuts» and said it is crystal clear that the political executive has «systematically eroded democracy» over the last 10 years. Participating in a debate in the Lok Sabha on 75 years of the Constitution, Moitra asserted that the need of the hour is to ensure that the idea of India survives in its purest form. For a significant part of her speech, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP trained her guns on former chief justice of India D Y Chandrachud, without naming him, and said what troubles the opposition is that some members of the higher judiciary appear to be doing their best to compromise the independence and integrity of the country's constitutional courts. «The outgoing CJI waxed eloquent on how the right to bail has been granted during his tenure… From A for Arnab to Z for Zubair, his alphabets seem to be abbreviated because it did not include G for Gulfisha Fatima, did not include H for Haney Babu, did not include K for Khalid Saifi, did not include S for Sharjeel Imam, U for Umar Khalid and countless others,» she said.
