Society vanishes when fertility rate falls below 2.1: RSS chief warns of India's population decline
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday stated that India's declining population is a concerning issue, noting that according to modern population science, a society vanishes when its fertility rate falls below 2.1. He also underlined that the fertility rate should be above three or four for the society to survive. «The decline in population is a matter of concern. Modern population science says that when the fertility rate of a society goes below 2.1, that society vanishes from the earth. The society gets destroyed even without any crisis. In this way, many languages and societies have disappeared. The population should not fall below 2.1. Our country's population policy was decided in 1998 or 2002, and it also mentions that the population of a society should not be less than 2.1. We need more than two or three; this is what population science says. The number is important for the survival of society,» Bhagwat said, addressing the Kathale Kul Sammelan in Nagpur.

Big hotel brands see room for growth in manufacturing hubs
hotels are coming up in India's manufacturing hubs, driven by the growing needs of business travellers for quality accommodation. Hotel brands such as Marriott, Hyatt, Orchid, Regenta, Vivanta and Ginger are setting up properties in industrial belts such as Vithalapur, Talegaon, Chakan, Bhiwandi, Pithampur, Kalinganagar, Sanand and Hosur. While visiting executives used to stay in hotels in cities close to these industrial areas in the past, increasing manufacturing activities and traffic woes are making them seek accommodation close to their factories. At Vithalapur, a five-star property, the Courtyard by Marriott and Hyatt Place, is expected to become operational within the next 12 months, underscoring the demand for premium hospitality options in this fast-evolving industrial hub over a two-hour drive from the Ahmedabad city. In the automotive town of Talegaon on the outskirts of Pune, the recently opened 100-room Fern Residency has gained traction among business travellers. Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh has seen mid-market offerings like Click Hotel and Sayaji, riding on robust corporate demand from the manufacturing sector. Chakan in Pune district and Bhiwandi near Mumbai are also attracting attention, with Ginger Hotel developing 200-room properties in both locations. These developments reflect the broader trend of hospitality players expanding to locations with significant manufacturing activity.

Growth seen at 6.1-6.8% for FY25 on 7-quarter Q2 low
Citing risk to the economic outlook and the likelihood of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India in February, they now predict gross domestic product (GDP) to grow 6.1-6.8% in the year ending March 31, lower than the central bank's forecast of 7.2%. GDP growth was the slowest in seven quarters at 5.4% in July-September, hurt by low consumption and weak investment demand. CareEdge Ratings lowered its FY25 GDP forecast to 6.5%, from 7%. «Urban consumption is seeing moderation after the sharp spurt, post-Covid,» said Rajani Sinha, its chief economist.

IPO rush keeps FPIs busy in primary market in November, outflow continues in secondary market
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) showed a sustained interest in the primary market in November 2024 while moderating the extent of selling in the secondary market compared with the previous month. According to the data from NSDL, they invested $2,098.4 million (Rs17,704 crore) in the Indian primary market through IPOs and QIBs. This followed the three-year high monthly investment of $2,361 million (Rs19.841.9 crore) in the previous month. In 2024 so far, FPIs have invested $12,373.9 million (Rs1,03,601 crore) through the primary route, far outpacing $5,242.1 million (Rs 43,347.1 crore) that they had pumped in the whole of 2023. Their higher engagement in the primary market owes to the rising activity in the IPO segment in the current year. As many as 79 mainboard IPOs have together raised nearly Rs 1.4 lakh crore so far in 2024, the highest in any year.

Gold loans from banks surge, other personal loans see moderate rise
gold loans from banks grew more than 50% over the last one year, while all other major personal loan segments saw moderate increase amid tepid consumer demand, high inflation and tighter regulatory oversight on unsecured lending, according to latest data from Reserve Bank of India. «Consumption moderated with elevated borrowing costs and inflation eating into household budgets,» said Crisil's chief economist Dharmakirti Joshi. Growth in gold loans, or bank loans against gold jewellery--mostly taken at times of distress or during emergencies-- though make good business sense, may not reflect a happy situation from borrowers' perspective, a senior banker said.

J-K BJP leaders demand action against Mehbooba Mufti over 'anti-national' remarks
Jammu and Kashmir BJP leaders on Sunday demanded action against PDP president Mehbooba Mufti for her «anti-national» remarks comparing the situation in Bangladesh with India. They welcomed the recent termination of services of two government employees over alleged terror links by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and said such actions should continue in the future to completely finish the terror ecosystem in the Union Territory. «Mehbooba's controversial statement comparing the situation in Bangladesh with India is completely wrong and condemnable. The world is aware of the worst kind of human rights violations in Bangladesh where the minority community is facing targeted attacks, women insulted and an elected prime minister forced to flee the country, besides the statues of its founder desecrated. »The J-K government should take a serious note of the anti-national statement of Mehbooba and her conspiracies. Action should be taken against her," former J-K BJP president Ravinder Raina told PTI on the sidelines of a party function here.

Unpacking India's fuming response at COP29: What really transpired?
India were fast asleep, a drama unfolded at a sprawling conference hall of the Olympic stadium in Azerbaijan's capital Baku. Diplomats from nearly 200 countries, civil society representatives and journalists had gathered to witness a decision that could determine the fate of climate action in the Global South. But what transpired was far from routine — it was a moment of diplomatic brinkmanship that left many stunned and India's delegation fuming. As the president of this year's UN climate conference, Mukhtar Babayev, approached the centrepiece agenda item — the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance — India's Deputy Lead Negotiator Neelesh Sah rushed to COP29 Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev to convey that the country wants to make a statement before the adoption of the contentious decision. Around 2:30 am, without so much as a pause for objections or comments, Babayev hammered the gavel, declaring the USD 300 billion climate-finance package adopted. The move was so swift, it left delegates from many developing countries blinking in disbelief.
