Where there's a will, there's a way to care for pet 'heirs'
will to ensure 'unlimited' care for his pet dog Tito is likely to trigger a 'pawsome' trend — more and more pet parents making provisions for their furry companions on their posthumous wish lists. While queries on these lines have been coming in for a while now, the trend is still at a nascent stage in India. Tata's move, say lawyers, will generate much more awareness about the issue, prompting more people to follow suit. Pets are not recognised as people capable of holding property or inheriting the estate of another person — they are deemed to be personal property. Therefore, while many Indians see their pets as their children, Indian law still doesn't. Hence, the law doesn't allow for either leaving anything to pets as a bequest; or creating a trust with a pet as a beneficiary.

Liquor sales expected to surge beyond Diwali 2024 in key states
Liquor sales in some states got a festive spark in October, with bottles flying off the shelves amid Durga Puja and the run-up to Diwali, shaking off the blues of a muted July-September. Companies expect the spirited recovery not to be limited to the festive season, but continue for the rest of this quarter, with the wedding season setting in and Christmas-New Year holidays ahead. “We see demand picking up due to warmer-than-usual weather,” said Ankur Jain, chief executive and founder of B9 Beverages, maker of Bira beer. “Specifically, premium beer has made inroads into gifting. We expect festive season momentum will continue into November and December.”

Airtel revenues likely to grow 13-16% through FY27
Bharti Airtel is slated to deliver 13%-16% growth in consolidated revenues/Ebitda compounded annually through FY24-FY27, propelled by a combination of more frequent tariff hikes, a ramp-up of its 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) offerings as well as a steady growth of its non-mobile businesses and Africa operations, analysts said. They added that reduced capex spends towards 5G and rural network expansion from FY25 onwards is also slated to help the nation's second-largest telco generate substantial free cash flows (FCF) in the next two fiscals. «With a moderation in capex intensity, Airtel is likely to generate significant free cash flows of ₹33,000 crore-₹43,000 crore in FY25-FY26, which should lead to significant deleveraging and improvement in shareholder returns,» Motilal Oswal said in a research note seen by ET.

India's 3-0 Kiwiwash: Rohit's men struggle in Mumbai test, spin woes persist
India were swept 3-0 by New Zealand at home. Not the Australians’ Final Frontier, with among the best teams assembled, not England’s BazBall, but New Zealand just playing Test cricket as it should be. India did not take their eyes off the prize—a place in the World Test Championship final—rather they were too glued to it, and took their eyes off the ball. Cricket, especially if you are a batsman, is a one-ball game, because that’s all it takes to end your stay, and if you’re not focussed in the moment, you’re done. This Indian team has built a proud home record because they play well together. There was a sense of fire under Virat Kohli, but Rohit Sharma has brought companionship back to the fore as a leader. He’s not one to cut someone down when they have had a bad day.

Cracks appear in boundary wall of Puri Jagannath temple, Odisha government seeks ASI help for repairs
Odisha government has sought help from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to repair multiple cracks that have developed in the Meghanada Pacheri, the boundary wall of Jagannath Temple in Puri. Temple servitors have raised concerns that wastewater from Anandabazar within the temple complex is seeping through these cracks. They also claimed that patches of algae have appeared on certain sections of the wall. Worried about the safety of the 12th-century shrine, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has urged the ASI to undertake necessary conservation work on the wall. «We are concerned about the safety of the Meghanada Pacheri. ASI officials and our technical team have already inspected the boundary wall, and we hope that ASI will soon carry out the required repairs,» SJTA chief administrator Arabinda Padhee said on Sunday. The temple's administration comes under the state's law department.

Gautam Gambhir's performance under scanner after disaster in Sri Lanka and India
Gautam Gambhir under immense pressure barely three months into his appointment as the head coach of the Indian team. He was appointed to the top post amid much fanfare and was also given a rare seat at the selection committee meeting for the tour of Australia. However, his initial report card clearly suggests things aren't looking good for the former India opener. Unless there is a remarkable turnaround Down Under, Gambhir, who was given a free hand in selection matters, may not have as much say in issues concerning the team in the coming times. Right after Gambhir took over the reins, India lost an ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years, and then New Zealand completed a 3-0 whitewash of his side in Tests at home on Sunday, something the team never experienced in its long cricketing journey.

Coal India hopes to rejoin dividend list as ECL improves performance
Coal India aims to eliminate Rs 2,200 crore in accumulated losses at its subsidiary, Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), and to rejoin the dividend list by FY 2025-26, a top official said on Sunday. At the foundation day event, Coal India chairman P M Prasad said Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, another previously loss-making subsidiary, has already re-entered the dividend list. He expressed confidence that ECL would achieve similar success by FY 2025-26. Coal India has seven coal-producing subsidiaries. «ECL is performing well and is on track to meet its production target of 54 million tonnes this year. We expect to eliminate two-thirds of its Rs 2,200 crore accumulated losses this fiscal year, with the remaining losses cleared by the following year, allowing it to rejoin the dividend list,» Prasad said. He added that the next few months would present challenges for production due to monsoon impacts on growth.

BCCI to discuss New Zealand whitewash, some star seniors could be phased out post Australia series
India players will be decided after the tour of Australia as the BCCI evaluates the shocking 0-3 drubbing against New Zealand at home while rolling out a structured phaseout policy before the start of the next WTC cycle. There is a high possibility that the five-match Test series against Australia could be the final one for at least two of the four seniors among Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who are in the last leg of their international careers. «Look, I don't think we can look that far ahead. It's important to focus on the next series, which is Australia,» Rohit said when asked for his thoughts on India's Test future given there is limited time left in his captaincy. «I'm not going to look beyond Australia series. Australia series, for us is now very, very important. We will try and focus on that rather than thinking what happens after,» he said.

Amid concerns over overleveraging of microfinance borrowers at the industry level, Ujjivan Small Finance has started chasing the next aspiration—a universal banking licence. For the first time ever, the bank has said in no uncertain terms that it would apply for the licence no later than March 2025. In his first ever media interaction after taking the driver’s seat, managing director Sanjeev Nautiyal discussed with ET's Atmadip Ray the business decisions that are taking shape at the bank's headquarters in Bengaluru. Executive director Carol Furtado also joined the conversation. Here is an edited excerpt: Q. Ujjivan is one of the just two small finance banks eligible to apply for universal banking licence at this point of time. AU has already thrown the hat in the ring. What is Ujjivan up to? Sanjeev Nautiyal: We are working on a plan and within this financial year, we see ourselves in a very good position to make an application to the Reserve Bank of India. Has the Ujjivan board approved it? Sanjeev Nautiyal: The board is agreeable to the fact that we should apply. We are building a strategy based on the guidance provided by the board.
