Columbia University threatens to expel student protesters who occupied administration building
Columbia University in New York early Tuesday, barricading entrances and unfurling a Palestinian flag from a window in the latest escalation of demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war on college campuses nationwide. The school promised they would face expulsion. The occupation at Columbia — where protesters shrugged off an ultimatum to abandon a tent encampment Monday or be suspended — unfolded as other universities stepped up efforts to clear out encampments. Police swept through some campuses, spurring confrontations with protesters and plenty of arrests. In rarer instances, university officials and protest leaders have struck agreements to restrict the disruption to campus life. And as cease-fire negotiations appeared to gain steam Tuesday, it wasn’t clear whether those talks would inspire campus protesters to ease their efforts.

Also Read: Oil prices decline amid Israel-Hamas peace negotiations, Fed rate cut hopes As of now, Brent crude futures have seen a modest increase of 0.26% in April, while WTI crude futures have experienced a slight decline of 0.55%. Crude prices surged sharply in mid-April, reaching their highest level since October, driven by Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel in retaliation. This was seen as a response to a suspected Israeli strike on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier in the month.

Hamas received 'extraordinarily generous' ceasefire proposal from Israel, says Blinken
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed on Monday a proposal for a ceasefire presented to Hamas by Israel, characterising it as «extraordinarily generous,» CNN reported. «In this moment the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire is Hamas,» he told World Economic Forum (WEF) President Borge Brende in the Saudi capital Riyadh. «They (Hamas) have to decide and they have to decide quickly,» he said. «I'm hopeful that they will make the right decision.»

Oil prices decline amid Israel-Hamas peace talks, Fed rate cut expectations
Oil settles higher on Middle East supply woes, US inflation data limits gains; Brent at $89/bbl “Optimism prevailed from the start of the trading session as cooling of US bond yields and letdown in middle-east conflict coupled with a drop in crude oil prices generated a lot of enthusiasm amongst the investors. With the polling season on, the market is hoping for a clear mandate in favour of the ruling party. The two-day Fed's monetary policy meeting starting Tuesday will be closely watched by global investors, although markets doesn't expect any change in the policy outcome," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd.

US military's pier in Gaza to cost $320 million
humanitarian aid has risen to $320 million, a U.S. defense official and a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. The figure, which has not been previously reported, illustrates the massive scale of a construction effort that the Pentagon has said involves about 1,000 U.S. service members, mostly from the Army and Navy. Still, the cost has roughly doubled from initial estimates earlier this year, according to a person familiar with the matter.

University uproar: The US loses credibility on free speech
The police crackdown on protests against the Gaza War in American universities, where students were staging sit-ins to demand a rollback of policies seen to be supportive of Israel’s offensive that has left over 35,000 Palestinians dead so far, leaves one aghast. Reminiscent of how the 1960s’ peace protests over the Vietnam War were thwacked back, cops used the sort of brutal force that makes the country’s claims of free-speech tolerance ring hollow across a globe that the US says is seeing a clash of democracy and autocracy, with America on the side of freedom.

There were no injuries reported among the maritime military coalition deployed in the area to counter such attacks.
