On Tuesday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rejected a request by Nicaragua to order Germany to halt military and other aid to Israel and renew funding to the UN aid agency in Gaza.
The top United Nations (UN) court said that legal conditions for making such an order weren’t met.
During hearings in the case, Germany argued that it has hardly exported any weapons to Israel since the offensive against Gaza started following the killer incursion into southern Israel by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023.
Earlier, the president of the ICJ opened the hearing on Tuesday to deliver the judges’ decision on a request by Nicaragua.
Nicaragua is a longstanding ally of the Palestinians. It had alleged that Germany is encouraging genocide by sending arms and other support to Israel. Germany has denied the allegations.
Israel vehemently denies that its raid on Gaza amounts to acts of genocide. The country insists that it is acting in self-defense!
As a country, Nicaragua’s case is the latest legal bid to stop Israel’s offensive. In 2023, at the court, South Africa accused Israel of genocide. The cases come as Israel’s supporters face growing calls to stop supplying it with weapons, and as some, including Germany, have grown more critical of the battle.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday said that Israel must still do more to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.
