Changes in labour, physical capital and productivity norms can help India hit 8% growth
To assess India's growth potential, we undertook a growth-accounting exercise. Created by Nobel-winning economist Robert Solow in 1957, it breaks down GDP growth into contributions from its basic drivers — labour (workforce adjusted for their skills), physical capital (machines and infrastructure) and productivity. A business-as-usual approach, in which these drivers evolve in line with recent trends, may not make for an exciting future.

Matty Healy of 'The 1975' angers section of LGBT community in Malaysia. Here's why
Matty Healy's recent protest during a concert in Malaysia has sparked significant responses from LGBT activists and allies in the nation. Critics have labeled the act as «performative activism», expressing concerns that it could exacerbate the difficulties faced by the LGBT community in Malaysia. Homosexuality remains criminalized in the country, with potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison. During the music festival in Kuala Lumpur last Friday, the lead singer of the indie-rock band «The 1975», Matty Healy, took the stage and launched into a profanity-laden tirade against Malaysia's anti-LGBT laws. In an act of protest, he also kissed his male bandmate. Throughout the performance, Healy appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and reportedly vandalized a drone owned by the concert organizers. Attendees even claimed that he spat on some fans. His defiant behavior continued as he swaggered across the stage and insulted the Malaysian government. The band's set was eventually shut down shortly after the incident. However well-intentioned, locals argue that his actions have disrupted an already delicate political environment for LGBT Malaysians, leading to further harm and damage. «The 1975» cancelled a concert in Indonesia Sunday, after Malaysia axed a festival over a same-sex kiss and tirade against the country's anti-LGBTQ laws by their frontman. Indonesia's LGBTQ laws are less strict than those in neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, where homosexuality is a crime. But several events have been cancelled in recent years.

Who will host 2026 Commonwealth Games? London Mayor shows interest, Rishi Sunak govt Remains skeptical
This is important because the British government has said that stepping in to host the commonwealth games is ‘slightly ahead of time’. Which Commonwealth nation has come forward? New Zealand and another Australian state have said that they are not ready to host the multisports event. The Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago are hosting the Commonwealth Youth Games from August 4 to August 11. More than one thousand athletes between the age of 14 and 18 are expected to participate in the youth games. As they have the infrastructure ready and have invested a lot, they may be ready to host the event, but the Caribbean islands are yet to make an offer. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has shown interest in hosting the match considering the fact that GBP 500 is less than what it may cost in other countries to host such a massive event. He has said that London ‘stands ready’ to host the games, but he added that it is up to the government to submit the bid. But the government wants Australia to take the responsibility.Indian Olympic General Secretary Rajiv Mehta has said that India is interested in holding the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Malaysian state of Selangor has also shown interest in hosting the games. The Malaysian city of Kuala Lumpur hosted the event in 1998. Sri Lanka was preparing in November 2020 to offer to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Hambantota. Similarly, the Canadian city of Victoria too has said that it can host the games. Canada hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1994.

The 1975 cancels Indonesia and Taiwan shows amid Malaysia LGBTQ controversy. This is what happened
The 1975, a British pop-rock band, has canceled upcoming shows in Indonesia and Taiwan after their set was cut short at a music festival in Malaysia. The decision came following frontman Matty Healy's comments on Malaysia's anti-gay laws and an on-stage kiss with a bandmate. The band had eagerly looked forward to performing for fans at Jakarta’s We the Fest on Sunday (July 23) and at the Taipei Music Center on Tuesday (July 25) as part of their Asia tour 2023. However, due to the current circumstances, they had no choice but to call off the scheduled performances. In a statement posted on We the Fest’s Twitter page, The 1975 wrote, “The 1975 regret to announce that their forthcoming shows in Jakarta and Taipei will no longer be going ahead as planned. The band never takes the decision to cancel a show lightly and had been eagerly looking forward to playing for fans in Jakarta and Taipei but unfortunately, due to current circumstances, it is impossible to proceed with the scheduled shows.” The controversy arose when Matty Healy openly criticized Malaysia's LGBTQ laws during the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur on July 21. He also engaged in a kiss with bassist Ross MacDonald on stage. The festival's organizer, Future Sounds Asia, responded by canceling the remaining days of the festival.

View: May a thousand CSR projects bloom
India became the first country to make CSR mandatory, and today, more than 80% companies in India have CSR programmes. This is more than what is reported from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines, even though they are more prosperous than India. Yet, India's CSR programmes are underestimated at the global level.
