Come, let us niksen
doing nothing is not something we would consciously do. But as the Dutch have pointed out, there can be great happiness in just doing nothing. They have also coined a word for this inactivity — niksen, which literally means just this, to do nothing. It means to be free of any purpose, to be completely idle. A period of niksen can act as a stress buster and help us regain focus. As has been said, niksen can make us more productive. Niksen is not the very antithesis of all that we are taught — to be focused, hardworking, productive, goal-oriented. Niksen is just an acknowledgement that there comes a time when we all need to take a break from all the running around. This is the classic work-life balance with a twist — instead of relaxing by reading a book or spending time with the family where again we are mentally engaged albeit in a good way, we niksen, just do nothing.

Trade deficit in Jan dips as imports fall more than exports
Icra Ltd expects India’s monthly trade deficit to stand at about $20 billion–$25 billion in the remaining months of FY24, resulting in a current account deficit of around 2.5% of GDP in Q3 and 1.7% of GDP in Q4FY24. “The exports dipping by 5% and imports dropping by 7% in first 10 months of the fiscal is largely an outcome of global slowdown and drop in commodity prices as well.

Capital inflows: Balancing market gains with economic risks
The Economist while examining the Netherlands’ loss of export competitiveness and rise in unemployment subsequent to the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea in 1959. The export of hydrocarbons brought in so much of foreign exchange that the Dutch guilder (this was before the EU was formed and most EU members adopted the euro as their currency) became overvalued, rendering non-gas Dutch exports less competitive.

Europe’s Box Office in 2023: How Barbenheimer and Spider-Man ruled the big screen
European cinema landscape experienced a prosperous year in 2023, with significant contributions from blockbuster films such as Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and Wonka. According to preliminary estimates from the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), the year saw a remarkable 21 percent increase in European admissions, reaching a total box office of approximately €7.1 billion ($7.6 billion). This marked a substantial gain of 24 percent in Europe and 25 percent in the European Union compared to 2022. While final data for 2023 will be released later in the spring, UNIC reported that several territories, including the Netherlands, Croatia, Albania, Serbia, and Montenegro, exceeded their box office revenues from the 2017-2019 period. Additionally, Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, and Slovakia matched pre-pandemic box office results.

Dutch court orders govt to stop exports of F-35 fighter jet parts to Israel
Dutch government on Monday to halt the export of F-35 fighter jet parts to Israel, citing a clear risk of violations of international law. A trio of human rights organizations brought a civil suit against the Netherlands in December, arguing authorities needed to reevaluate the export license in light of Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip. «It is undeniable that there is a clear risk that the exported F-35 parts are used in serious violations of international humanitarian law,» Judge Bas Boele said in reading out the ruling, eliciting cheers from several people in the courtroom. The exports must cease within seven days.

Mint Primer: From Europe to India, why are farmers angry?
Mint explains: Beginning January, farmers from several member-nations of the European Union (EU)—Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain—invaded cities with their tractors, burning tyres, dumping manure, raiding supermarkets, blocking access to ports and highways and choking city centres. They are protesting subsidy cuts, high energy prices, cheap grain imports from Ukraine, beef imports from Latin America, growing clout of big agribusiness and climate policies limiting the use of chemical inputs. It is a profitability crisis—due to higher farming costs and low produce prices.
