Mint Explainer: BJP's third term - coalition politics and India's foreign policy
BJP, having secured more than 272 seats on its own in both 2014 and 2019, was not concerned with political stability. However, in his first speech after the results on Tuesday, Modi emphasized that India would continue to look outward, seeking to integrate into global value chains and assist countries in need. For the world, Modi is someone they have engaged with for the past decade, someone they have done business with and hence predictable to work with.

UK's MI6 recruited Chinese couple as spies, alleges China: Report
BBC reported on 3 June. The Chinese ministry, in a post on its official WeChat channel, stated that MI6 operatives turned a Chinese man identified only by his surname Wang and his wife surnamed Zhou against Beijing, the report said, adding the duo worked in 'core confidential' departments in a Chinese state agency.ALSO READ: US and allies clash with China and Russia over North Korea's launches and threats to use nukesAccording to the report, the Chinese ministry also alleged the UK's Secret Intelligence Service began cultivating Wang in 2015 when he went to the UK for his studies under a Sino-British exchange programme."Wang was initially hesitant but could not resist [the operatives'] repeated persuasion, enticement and even coercion, and eventually agreed," BBC quoted the ministry said in a statement on WeChat, that added, "Under Wang's strong instigation, Zhou agreed to collect intelligence... and he and his wife became British spies."Adding more, China said that UK took 'special care' of Wang and invited him to dinners.

El Niño ending; at least 60% chance of La Niña developing during July-Sept: WMO
record-high temperatures. Sea surface temperatures have been record-high for the past 13 months, according to the WMO.The WMO said this is happening due to the naturally occurring El Niño — unusual warming of waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean — and the additional energy trapped in the atmosphere and ocean by greenhouse gases from human activities.Amid a prevailing but weakening El Niño, millions of people in South Asia, including India and Pakistan, endured brutal heat in April and May.The latest forecasts from the WMO Global Producing Centres of Long-Range Forecasts give equal chances (50 per cent) of either neutral conditions or a transition to La Niña during June-August.The chance of La Niña conditions increases to 60 per cent during July to September and 70 per cent during August to November. The probability of El Niño redeveloping is negligible during this time, the WMO said. While El Niño is associated with weaker monsoon winds and drier conditions in India, La Niña -- the antithesis of El Niño -- leads to plentiful rainfall during the monsoon.Last month, the India Meteorological Department had forecast above normal rain in the monsoon season in India with favourable La Niña conditions expected to set in by August-September.The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it.

70 terrorists waiting to infiltrate, launch pads active across LoC: Jammu & Kashmir DGP
PTI, Swain said that though the capability has been degraded, it has not stopped Pakistan from sending men and material to Jammu and Kashmir. However, the top cop said that Indian security personnel will make it "absolutely hard" for the adversary to succeed. The DGP stated that drone droppings activities pose a significant challenge as they enable the smuggling of arms, ammunition, explosives, cash and narcotics."In our meetings with our security partners, we generally have come to the conclusion that it is a fact that the adversary or the enemy has not stopped from sending men and material," said Swain, who holds the dual charge of the J&K Police and the CID, told PTI in an interview.Swain added that the threat remains and sustained efforts are required to further reduce the "enemy's ability to destabilise the area".Meanwhile, he also acknowledged some success in countering the attempts made by the enemy."I would say the enemy's intent is very much there, the capability certainly degraded, but the ability to occasionally rock the system and unsettle you is there," he said. The Army, paramilitary forces and the Jammu and Kashmir Police are determined that they will make it absolutely hard for the adversary to succeed, Siwan said.On May 27, in a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police in Kupwara, a large cache of arms, ammunition and war-like stores were recovered.

The world should take up China's nuclear no-first-use treaty proposal
The world is too distracted with ongoing wars and high-stakes election campaigns to pay attention to a remarkable proposal from China. At the United Nations Conference on Disarmament held in Geneva this February, one of Beijing’s senior officials dealing with nuclear weapons policy declared that “nuclear-weapon states should negotiate and conclude a treaty on no-first-use of nuclear weapons against each other or make a political statement in this regard." There had been some indications towards the end of 2023 that China was planning to engage the United States in a new phase of discussions on nuclear security, but the proposal in Geneva is as breathtaking as it is promising. The world—and India — must approach it constructively.

kharvas, sarangs and malams, these young men kept commerce and trade alive in the triangle between India’s west coast, the Middle East and East Africa. Many of these boats, also called dhows, would end their lives on this coast too, as they’d come to be broken up in Alang, along with mightier beasts made of iron.In 2013, Shaina Anand and Ashok Sukumaran, from the Mumbai-based artists’ collective CAMP, began documenting the lives of Kachchhi sailors in India, Sindh and Balochistan in Pakistan, and southern Iran, and followed them on their voyages to Sharjah and Dubai.
