India’s avocado boom fuels import surge as local supply lags
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.NEW DELHI: India’s avocado demand is surging, but domestic supply is still playing catch-up, keeping the country reliant on imports even as local cultivation expands.Government data show imports have more than tripled in two years, rising to $42.27 million in FY26 (till February), from about $27 million in FY25 and $13.5 million in FY24. Domestic output, meanwhile, has increased more gradually—from about 6,000 tonnes in 2023 to around 9,000 tonnes in 2026, experts said. The mismatch highlights a widening gap: rising health-driven consumption is outpacing India’s nascent production base, forcing the market to lean on overseas suppliers even as farmers begin to scale up planting. The area under avocado cultivation has expanded over the years, with farmers in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim and parts of Maharashtra responding to growing urban demand.

Indian seafood exports to face significant pressure due to US reciprocal tariffs, says FICCI study
Indian seafood exports will face significant pressure following the imposition of the US reciprocal tariffs, according to a study by the industry body FICCI. India's exports of fish, meat, and processed seafood are valued at US USD 2.58 billion with six product categories--Frozen Shrimp, Frozen Fish, Fish Meal and Fish Feed, Frozen Squid, Surimi & Analogue Products, and Frozen Cuttlefish--accounting for 94 per cent of total export value. US is India's largest seafood export market, holding a 34.5 per cent share of total export value. Frozen shrimp dominates, contributing 91.9 per cent of the export value (USD 2.34 billion) and 90.4 per cent of the volume (2.97 lakh tonnes). «Indian seafood exports will face significant pressure following the imposition of the US reciprocal tariffs,» the study said. India competes with countries like Canada, Ecuador, Indonesia and Vietnam in these categories. Other Latin American countries also compete in the market.

How a standalone ministry of manufacturing and supply chains could do the trick for India
bilateral trade agreements. Accompanying political energy and encouraging words reflect a dramatic departure from sobering scepticism of the recent past. The big change is, of course, Donald Trump's unsheathing of tariffs. Inevitably, trade negotiations with the US are the principal driver. Not every trade agreement will be uniform. Concessions will likely vary, depending on strategic vulnerability. As India's most consequential business, technology and foreign policy relationship, the US will get priority in timing and substance. This is rooted in realism. It's the same approach every other major trade partner of Washington will take. In a volatile world, marked by American recalibration and retrenchment, there are significant gains to becoming among the earliest countries to find accord with the Trump administration. Gains will be both tangible and intangible.

India offers trade pacts to individual members of Mercosur
Piyush Goyal Wednesday proposed signing of free trade agreements individually with the members of the 4-member Mercosur bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. His statement comes as the efforts to expand the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with the Mercosur are stuck. “I propose to either expand the MERCOSUR trade agreement or look at trade deals bilaterally,” he said at a CII event. India went ahead with a bilateral trade deal with UAE when the talks to secure a trade pact with Gulf Cooperation Council nations weren’t making much headway. Goyal also said that India is also working with Chile to expand its PTA with Chile and turn it into a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The PTA with Chile was signed in 2006 and expanded in 2017. Within the LAC region which includes 33 countries the FTA negotiations with Peru are in advanced stages.

Ahead of IOC election, 350 Olympians urge candidates to make climate action top priority
Saina Nehwal and PR Sreejesh, have written a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential candidates, urging them to make climate action their top priority. As IOC members gather in Costa Navarino, Greece, to vote on the seven candidates next week (March 18-21), the Olympians called for stronger commitments from the IOC to cut carbon emissions, promote sustainability in host cities, set clear guidelines on polluting sponsors and use its platform to advocate for climate action. Climate impacts are «no longer a distant threat, but a current and growing harm to the sports we love and to the countries that make up our Olympic family», the letter said. The signatories include 57 Olympic champions and over 100 Olympic flag bearers. They represent some of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, including Argentina, Aruba, the Bahamas, Cabo Verde, Colombia, Cook Islands, Eswatini, Fiji, Ghana, India, Kenya, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Sierra Leone and Zambia. Recognizing that extreme weather events are already disrupting the Summer and Winter Olympics and affecting athlete performance and safety, the letter urges decisive action to ensure the games remain accessible and safe for future generations. Earlier this year, massive wildfires burned large areas of Los Angeles, the host city of the 2028 Olympic Games. The fires killed about 30 people, destroyed thousands of buildings, and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.

Costly deportations prompt Trump administration to halt military flights
Trump administration has suspended the use of military aircraft for deporting migrants, citing high costs and inefficiencies, according to defense officials, as reported by Wall street journal. The last such flight took place on March 1, and no further flights are currently scheduled, officials confirmed. Initially implemented as part of President Donald Trump's hardline immigration policies, the use of military flights was intended to send a strong message regarding the administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously stated, “The message is clear: If you break the law, if you are a criminal, you can find your way at Guantanamo Bay… You don’t want to be at Guantanamo Bay.” ALSO READ: OPT and H-1B changes: Indian students face uncertainty as US immigration policy debate heats up

They’re key to the UK’s quintessential working-class dishes, starting with fish-and-chips. More recently, as pubs have struggled, they’ve given the drinking spots an additional revenue stream.

How the nativity reminds us of our responsibilities towards animals
The Bible doesn’t mention animals at the birth in Bethlehem. A text called the Gospel of Pseudo Matthew, now not considered Biblical, mentions an ox and an ass. St Francis invoked this in the Italian village of Greccio in 1223, creating the first Nativity tableau of Christ’s birth. He wished to emphasise Christ’s humble origins and importance for all the world, not just humans. “Laudato sie, mi Signore, cum tucte le Tue creature,” he wrote in his Canticle of the Sun: “Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures.” In time, Nativity scenes included other animals, like the sheep of the shepherds and the camels of the Magi. In other parts of the world, local animals also feature, like elephants in India, llamas in Peru and kangaroos in Australia. Oddly, pigs rarely appear in Nativity scenes. An important reason for Christianity’s success was discarding food-related taboos, like the one on pork enforced in Christ’s own Jewish community. Yet, pigs seem out of place. Does an animal raised only to be killed feel inappropriate in a scene devoted to new life?
