Russia preparing for military confrontation with West, says Estonia
Russia is preparing for a military confrontation with the West within the next decade and could be deterred by a counter build-up of armed forces, Estonia's Foreign Intelligence Service said on Tuesday. A growing number of Western officials have warned of a military threat from Russia to countries along the eastern flank of Nato, calling for Europe to get prepared by rearming. The chief of the intelligence service said the assessment was based on Russian plans to double the number of forces stationed along its border with Nato members Finland and the Baltic States of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

Baltic leaders have emphasised that even small Russian advances could be existentially threatening to their states. “It cannot be ruled out that within a three to five year period, Russia will test Article 5 and NATO’s solidarity," warned Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark’s defence minister, on February 9th.

‘Russophobia is promoted as state policy in European countries,’ says Vladimir Putin
Vladimir Putin castigated Europe for “Russophobia" and aimed the Baltic States for their human rights record during the inauguration of a World War II memorial on Saturday. As reported by Reuters, over the past nearly two years since deploying Russian troops into Ukraine, Putin has consistently drawn parallels with the struggle against the Nazis as a means to unify his nation. Who is in charge of Europe?
eastward enlargement, once dormant policy areas, are now priorities—giving a new voice to Ukraine’s neighbours in central Europe. The rise of China, and the prospect of resurgent Trumpism in America, has caused the EU to rethink its economic arrangements—often along statist French lines. Climate imperatives have reinforced the value of taking action at collective level—an approach favoured by the EU’s quasi-federal institutions in Brussels.

NATO’s promises to Ukraine mark real progress
Read more of our recent coverage of the Ukraine war As he headed to NATO’s gathering in Vilnius, a tetchy Volodymyr Zelensky called it “unprecedented and absurd" that Ukraine was apparently not being given a clear promise of speedy membership of the alliance. If that was meant as a last-ditch attempt to twist arms, it failed. The final communiqué, as he feared, refers to a need for conditions to be met and for allies to agree, even as it avoids dates and timelines.
