University of California academic workers strike to stand up for pro-Palestinian protesters
Graduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz walked off their jobs and went on strike Monday, the first campus to do so as part of a systemwide protest against a public university they say has violated the speech rights of pro-Palestinian advocates. United Auto Workers Local 4811 represents 48,000 graduate students who work as teaching assistants, tutors, researchers and other academic employees on the 10-campus UC system. Organizers said the campuses will not strike all at once, opting instead for rolling strikes, to protest the arrests and forcible ejection by police of union members who participated in demonstrations calling for an end to the war in Gaza.

Mint Primer: Beam me up, Scotty... into the boardroom
Google’s long-term experiment to create a science fiction-like 3D, holographic ultra-realistic display is now a real product. After many failures, is Silicon Valley’s quest to build screens that look like teleportation portals finally nearing promise? In development for at least five years, it is a video conferencing system on steroids. It uses a 3D light-field display to create a holographic, 3D image of people appearing on the screen.

Why Nestle India's shareholders rejected higher royalty payment to parent
Mint, two of the largest money managers in Europe opposed the decision of the board of Nestle India. “The performance of the company does not sufficiently demonstrate the benefits of the royalty payments over the years, which have grown at a rate higher than the company's revenues and net profit," said Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), UK’s largest fund manager, managing $1.5 trillion of assets. Nordea Asset Management, the investment arm of the Nordic region’s largest bank, having $400 billion in assets under management, also opposed the resolution.

‘Developers, language diversity make India crucial for Google’s future’
NEW DELHI : Mountain View, California: India's rich tapestry of languages is emerging as a significant driving force behind future advancements in mainstream artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to Josh Woodward, vice president and global head of Google's innovation engine, Google Labs. Woodward said India may be paving the way for integrating diverse linguistic datasets into AI systems, thereby unlocking new possibilities in revolutionizing AI technologies. For instance, a state-backed initiative, such as the Bhashini project, which is spearheading efforts to harness the potential of the 22 official Indian languages, could be a major catalyst.
