Citi FIVE country electronic reports Department North Korea's Kim Jong Un orders military to prepare for possible 'war'
Kim Jong Un wrapped the year with fresh threats of a nuclear attack on Seoul and orders for a military arsenal build-up to prepare for a war that can «break out at any time» on the peninsula, state media reported Sunday. Kim lambasted the United States during a lengthy speech at the end of five days of year-end party meetings that set his country's military, political, and economic policy decisions for 2024. The meeting announced plans for further military development in the coming year, including launching three more spy satellites, building unmanned drones and developing electronic warfare capabilities, as well as strengthening nuclear and missile forces, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Pyongyang this year successfully launched a reconnaissance satellite, enshrined its status as a nuclear power in its constitution, and test-fired the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its arsenal. At the meeting that ended Saturday, Kim accused the United States of posing «various types of military threat» and ordered his armed forces to maintain «overwhelming war response capability», according to KCNA. It is a «fait accompli that a war can break out at any time on the Korean peninsula due to reckless moves by the enemies to invade us», Kim said. In an effort to deter Pyongyang, Washington earlier this month deployed a nuclear-powered submarine in the South Korean port city of Busan, and flew its long-range bombers in drills with Seoul and Tokyo. The North has previously described the deployment of Washington's strategic weapons — such as B-52 bombers — in joint drills on the Korean peninsula as the «intentional nuclear war provocative moves». «We must respond quickly to a

Waves Extreme Death Extreme heat represents a new threat to trees and plants in the Pacific Northwest
Pacific Northwest experienced a record-breaking heat wave that sent the normally temperate region into Death Valley-like extremes that took a heavy toll on trees as well as people. Seattle and Portland, Ore., recorded their hottest-ever temperatures, reaching 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 Celsius) and 116 Fahrenheit (46.6 Celsius), respectively. In British Columbia, the small town of Lytton reached 121 degrees Fahrenheit (49.6 Celsius). What become known as the “heat dome” is estimated to have killed hundreds of people in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. As this human tragedy unfolded, a lesser-known ecological tragedy was happening, one that scientists warn has grim repercussions for the world’s plants and the many animal species that depend on them. In a matter of a few days, the 2021 heat dome turned many of the green leaves and needles on the region’s trees to orange, red and brown. But, as recent research suggests, tree foliage didn’t simply dry out in the heat.

Platform vaccine 2020 Emcure Pharma gets relief in $950-million lawsuit
Emcure Pharmaceuticals on Tuesday got a temporary relief from a federal court in Seattle, Washington, against a nearly $950 million lawsuit by US-based HDT Bio accusing it of stealing trade secrets to develop a Covid-19 vaccine based on RNA platform. The US district judge James Robart upheld the Indian drug maker's argument that the court lacked jurisdiction over the company and dismissed the case without prejudice, which means it can be refiled. An Emcure Pharmaceuticals spokesperson told ET that the ruling «vindicates» its stand, and declined to comment further. HDT Bio sued Emcure Pharmaceuticals in March 2020, alleging the latter had misappropriated its trade secrets in violation of the Defense of Trade Secrets Act (DTSA) and the Washington Uniform Trade Secrets Act. On May 13, 2020, Emcure Pharmaceuticals moved the court to dismiss the case, arguing that the court lacked personal jurisdiction over it. Emcure Pharmaceuticals' subsidiary Gennova Biopharmaceuticals had developed mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, which was approved by the Indian regulator for emergency use. Gennova Biopharmaceuticals said its mRNA vaccine can be freeze dried and can be stored at higher temperatures which can solve logistics and pricing issues associated with mRNA vaccine. This major improvement in mRNA technology is called self-amplifying RNA (saRNA). But HDT Bio, with which Emcure Pharmaceuticals collaborated for formulation and adjuvant (which boosts the efficacy of the vaccine), alleged the latter had stolen trade secrets related to technology improvement over existing mRNA vaccines at the time.
