Marilyn Lovell, known for her courage during the Apollo 13 accident, passed away at 93 on August 27 in Lake Forest, Illinois. Her husband, Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell, was by her side. During Apollo 8's moon flight in 1968, her husband named a small moon mountain after her, calling it Mount Marilyn. Marilyn Lillie Lovell was born on July 11, 1930, in Milwaukee, WI, as the youngest of five siblings. She graduated from Juneau High School in Milwaukee, where she met her future husband, James A Lovell, Jr. She attended George Washington University in Washington DC to be closer to him while he attended the U.S. Naval Academy. They married right after his graduation in Annapolis, MD. Marilyn was an active member of the original «Astronaut's Wives Club,» supporting her husband's NASA career. She is survived by her husband, Captain James A Lovell, Jr; four children Barbara Harrison (Ken), James Lovell III (Darice), Susan Lovell, Jeffrey Lovell (Annie); Eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday, September 8, at 11 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, IL. Instead of flowers, donations in memory of Marilyn Lovell can be made to Northwestern Memorial Foundation to support Lake Forest Hospital APP Critical Care Fellowship at foundation.nm.org.
