markets Art Booking Gap love show classical How scribblings enhance the value of second-hand cookbooks
KKS Murthy, the owner of Bengaluru’s Select Books, who recently passed away aged 95, it was after a gap of many years. He seemed quite unchanged, sitting amid the heaps of books in his now 80-year-old shop off Brigade Road. He recognised me at once and, without asking, directed me to a pile of second-hand cookbooks. I rarely buy physical books now. You can tell me all about the joys of holding a printed book, and I’ll shrug and switch on the e-books app on my tablet or phone, with instant access to thousands of books, new ones instantly available, all easily searchable, with adjustable lighting and size. I also live in a humid Goa valley, which is rotting my old books. But I still love second-hand books. Booksellers like Murthy who specialise in them are rare now, with the places where they congregated — Fort’s pavements in Mumbai, Moore Market in Chennai —mostly cleared away. New & Secondhand, in Mumbai’s Dhobi Talao, is a distant memory. But Murthy kept the flag flying for the kind of place where, instead of the purposive searching of regular bookshops, you could randomly sift through piles and find the one book which, through past owners and shops, was waiting for you.

UPS MET Man ICE Photos social Man unwraps an ice cream bar expecting a sweet treat. Ends up finding a whole frozen snake
social media, leaving users stunned and struggling to believe what they were seeing. The incident took place in Pak Tho, Mueang Ratchaburi, where a man named Rayban Naklengboon had purchased the ice cream from a local street vendor. Expecting a sweet treat, he was instead met with a chilling sight—a black-and-yellow snake’s head embedded in the frozen dessert, its lifeless eyes staring back at him. Stunned by what he had just found, Rayban took to Facebook to share photos of the bizarre incident. His post, which referenced a popular black bean-flavored ice cream in Thailand, quickly went viral, sparking a wave of shock and disgust among users. Along with the photos, he wrote that the snake had “big eyes” and asked his followers if it was really dead yet. He also added that it is a real picture, because he bought the ice cream for himself.

markets COST Manufacturing Harley-Davidson wellness Trade country India, US trade deal is key to Trump’s economic agenda as well
Donald Trump's push to boost American production and exports, ToI reported. However, across-the-board duty reductions may not necessarily translate into higher US shipments to India, as companies are likely to source goods from more competitive markets like China or Southeast Asia. Despite the tariff debates, American brands such as Harley-Davidson and Tesla do not currently manufacture vehicles in the US for export to India. Harley-Davidson, a brand often associated with US presidents, imports its motorcycles from Thailand, while Tesla—on the verge of entering the Indian market—plans to ship its electric vehicles from Germany after Indian authorities discouraged imports from China. Locational advantages, lower freight costs, and economies of scale make it more profitable for companies to manufacture in other countries rather than the US. Many firms also take advantage of India's free trade agreements to ship goods at zero duty.

markets UPS Citi Food beautiful A bigger India: The economics behind building tourism beyond the Taj Mahal
Delhi and Udaipur. This being part of the ‘Golden Triangle’, the plane usually had a fair number of tourists, many from France. Seated somewhere near on the plane, I would hear them catalog the ways in which “this could be such a great place if only…”. In French, of course, oblivious to the possibility that anyone around would understand. While I seethed, my nationalist instincts primed. I wanted to ask them how much they paid for their room in a haveli near the lake, and three square meals among the bougainvilleas? Where else could they buy so much beauty so cheap? All that came back to me with the recent stories in the Economist and Le Monde on why India does so badly on tourism: India gets about 10 million foreign tourists a year, while France, a tenth in area and less than a twentieth in population, gets 100 million. France has the Mona Lisa, but we have the Taj Mahal. France is easy for European tourists but we are next to China, the biggest spender in the world on international tourism.
