Pakistan performs a fine balancing act, again
Several media reports of late have said that Pakistan has been supplying weapons to Ukraine for that country’s resistance against the Russian invasion. Most such reports seem to originate from the Indian media but there is the occasional non-Indian source that goes into some detail about such transfers. Pakistan’s defence relationship with Ukraine, over three decades old, is valued at some$1.6 billion but the flow has largely been towards Pakistan, in the form of T-80 UD battle tanks. It is these tanks, and some artillery ammunition, that Pakistan is suspected of sending to Ukraine.

MUMBAI : Amid last month’s stock market breakout, Indians purchased the largest quantity of sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) at 7.77 tonnes worth a whopping ₹4,604 crore in the first series of this fiscal year, underscoring the preference for an asset that acts as a hedge against inflation and a safe-haven asset at times of global uncertainty. Peace and prosperity in Mekong region play pivotal role in India's Act East policy, says External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar
Jaishankar on Sunday said that peace and prosperity in the Mekong region play a pivotal role in realising India's vision for security and growth for all countries in the region under its Act East policy. In his opening remarks at the 12th Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Mechanism meeting here, Jaishankar said the lower Mekong region holds immense significance for India both in a historic sense and a contemporary one. «We represent the ancient river civilizations of this continent,» he said. The Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) is an initiative by six countries — India and five ASEAN countries — Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam — for cooperation in tourism, culture, education, as well as transport and communications. «Peace and prosperity in the region also play a pivotal role in realising Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi's vision of security and growth for all in the region under India's Act East policy,» he said. «The Mekong Ganga Cooperation holds a special place in this region as the oldest sub-regional cooperation rooted in the rich historical, geographical and cultural ties among our six member countries,» Jaishankar said.

UK defence minister to quit at next reshuffle, step down as MP
UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said on Sunday that he will step down from the Cabinet at the next reshuffle, expected in a few months' time, after serving four years in the job. The 53-year-old Conservative Party member of Parliament since 2005 also told 'The Sunday Times' that he will not stand as an MP at the next general election, expected next year. Wallace has served as defence minister under three British prime ministers — Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak — and has played a high-profile role in the UK's response to the Russia-Ukraine war conflict. «I went into politics in the Scottish parliament in 1999. That's 24 years. I've spent well over seven years with three phones by my bed,» Wallace told the newspaper. «While I am proud to have worked with so many amazing people and helped contribute to protecting this great country, the cost of putting that ahead of my family is something I am very sad about,» he said. The minister is believed to have informed Prime Minister Sunak of his decision to stand down from the Cabinet last month.

An enlarged Nato does not enhance its appeal
On 8 July, Ukraine marked its 500th day of holding out against Russia, whose openly revanchist bid to keep Kyiv aligned—and Black Sea access secure—was foiled with such hardy resolve that the war-torn country’s will to embrace the West was left in little doubt. Relations between the two ex-Soviet republics had snapped chiefly over Kyiv’s interest in joining the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato), a mutual defence pact whose nuclear umbrella covers most of the rich West. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed its Nordic neighbours Sweden and Finland to seek the same security.

The World Bank aims to achieve a liveable planet free of poverty
World leaders are all too familiar with the global community’s challenges: loss of progress in our fight against poverty, an existential climate crisis, a fledgling pandemic recovery, and a crippling war on the borders of Europe. But beneath the surface, a deep mistrust is quietly pulling the Global North and South apart at a time when we need to be uniting if we are to have any hope of overcoming these intertwined crises. The Global South’s frustration is understandable.
