Strike at Gatwick Airport in South London likely to paralyse operations
The unions have called for a strike demanding higher wages and better service conditions. The staff are not employed by Gatwick Airport, they work for four companies- ASC, GGS, DHL Services, and Menzies Aviation. The representatives of the DHL Services and Unite are holding talks to resolve the issue and avoid the strike. But there are problems as Unite has rejected a demand for an 11 percent hike in wages. A spokesperson for Menzies Airlines said that this hike is in addition to the pay revision of 2022. But he said that negotiations are being held and both sides want to avoid the strike. But the unions point out that most of the workers get an average of GBP 12 per hour and work in difficult and demanding conditions. Many companies cut many jobs and many roles were made redundant during the pandemic. Now they are denying the much-awaited pay hike. The experts feel that if the strike takes place, it will further complicate the issue and put the British aviation industry under pressure as it is already under strain due to limited air space caused by Russia-Ukraine War. Besides, workers in air traffic controls are also planning a strike. It may force some airlines to cut flights. EasyJet has already canceled more than 1,700 flights. Airlines strike is looming large at a time there have been several strikes in other sectors like nursing, railways, metro services, Border Force staff, and Civil Services. They all are demanding increased wages as the living cost has gone up in the country.

Russia’s Putin Moves to Dismantle Wagner Paramilitary Group
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Wagner paramilitary group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin “simply doesn’t exist," as he moves to dismantle an organization that was critical to Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine before it turned on the Russian establishment in a short-lived mutiny last month. Putin’s comments, in an interview published late Thursday in Russian newspaper Kommersant, came days after Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had taken control of Wagner tanks, artillery and guns after its involvement in the biggest challenge to Putin in his 23 years in power.

Tennis: Can Novak Djokovic equal Roger Federer in Wimbledon men’s single
Wimbledon titles? He has dominated the All-England Club turf so far, but the road ahead is not a cakewalk. The Serb will take on number eight Jannik Sinner at the semifinal on Friday. The other semifinal will be played between number one Carlos Alcaraz and number three Daniil Medvedev. It is not the first time that Djokovic will meet Sinner. They clashed in the Wimbledon quarterfinal last year when the 23-time Grand Slam winner thrashed the prodigy. He is already one of the top tennis players in the world. He is a former skiing player and has friends with legend Lindsey Vonn. Both Alcaraz and Medvedev are former U.S. Open champions. Alcaraz won it last year at the age of just 19. He is pursuing his second major title. In women’s singles, all eyes are set on Ons Jabeur who stormed into the semifinal by thrashing defending champion Elena Rybakina 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. She also avenged her defeat in the Wimbledon final last year. The Tunisian tennis sensation became the first African to reach the Wimbledon women’s final last year. Will she beat all odds this year and win the championship? She will meet second seed Aryana Sabalenka in the semifinal Friday. Sabalenka thrashed Madison Keys in the quarterfinal. In another semifinal, Ukrainian Elena Svitolina will meet Czech Marketa Vondrousova. Vondrousova is looking to be the first unseeded player to win Wimbledon women’s championship. In men’s singles, British player Andry Murray went out of the tournament after he had lost to Stefano Tsitsipas.
