Bombay High Court on Friday extended the relief from arrest given to former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Mumbai Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede till March 27 in connection with a money laundering case. The court has adjourned the matter till March 27. The matter was adjourned after the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) sought time to file a short reply on Sameer Wankhede's petition challenging ED's Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against him. ECIR is a formal entry of a complaint lodged by the ED. Wankhede has challenged the ECIR in the Bombay HC and has sought to quash the case against him.

Wankhede after the ED took cognisance of a first information report (FIR) by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in an alleged ₹25-crore bribe demand from Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's family to spare his son Aryan Khan in a drugs case. In the beginning of this month, the former NCB officer had filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking to quash the ED's case. He has also sought, through an interim order, protection from any coercive action and a stay on the agency's probe.

The central agency has booked the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. Some former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials have also been summoned. Wankhede, a 2008-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Customs and Indirect Taxes cadre, has moved the Bombay High Court seeking protection from any coercive action by the anti-money laundering agency.

Bombay High Court on Thursday frowned on media reports pertaining to witnesses who will be summoned in the CBI probe against IRS officer Sameer Wankhede on charges of extortion and bribery in connection with the cruise ship drug bust case. The HC sought to know who was leaking such information. A division bench of Justices A S Gadkari and S G Dige said the media reports have said the information is from Central Bureau of Investigation sources.
