Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the ongoing panchayat elections in Punjab on grounds of alleged irregularities in the nomination process, saying there will be «chaos» if courts start staying elections on polling day. The polling for panchayats began at 8 AM on Tuesday in Punjab and the petitions, seeking a stay of the ongoing electoral process, were mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. «If polling has started today, how can we intervene at this stage? Probably the high court realised the gravity of it and vacated the stay on the elections,» the bench, which also comprised justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said.

Election Commission of India is set to announce Jharkhand and Maharashtra election schedule on Tuesday at 3:30pm, following the conclusion of polls in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. The current term for the Maharashtra assembly ends on November 26, while the Jharkhand assembly will complete its term on January 5, 2025. In the 2019 elections, Jharkhand conducted polling in five phases, whereas Maharashtra had just one phase. The procedure was a follow-up to the angioplasty which he had had on July 20, 2012, when doctors put in eight stents to remove the multiple blockages he had in three main arteries in his heart. BCCI has decided to scrap the contentious Impact Player rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. The Impact Player concept was introduced in SMAT couple of years ago and was later extended to the Indian Premier League. «Kindly note that the BCCI has decided to do away with the provision of the 'Impact Player' for the ongoing season,» the BCCI informed the state associations on Monday. The BCCI's decision to do away with the Impact Player comes shortly after it decided to retain the rule in the IPL till 2027. With record 250 plus total seen in the IPL this year, the Impact Player experiment was questioned by many including India skipper Rohit Sharma.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL)-owned Viacom18 and Walt Disney's Star India are expected to complete their merger by the third quarter of this financial year, pending additional approvals, according to a regulatory filing from Reliance Industries Limiter (RIL). In its quarterly report, RIL noted that Viacom18 and Star India have already received conditional approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for their proposed merger. However, the CCI has yet to issue its detailed order regarding the Star-Viacom18 merger. The competition regulator approved the transaction on 28th August.

He has directed the authorities to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15, and also asked them to issue advisory to IT firms to allow their employees to work from home from October 15 to 18. The RMC said Tamil Nadu would receive heavy rain due to a low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am today. «It is likely to become a well marked low pressure area and move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next two days,» it said.
