TikTok's US future still in limbo as commerce secretary visits China
Gina Raimondo's visit to China is putting a spotlight on the future of TikTok in the United States, where criticism of the app and its ties to Beijing reached a fever pitch this year. Despite the intense pressure on the popular short-form video app, which is owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, efforts to ban or regulate it in Washington have not borne fruit. And even with all that scrutiny, Raimondo is not planning to discuss TikTok while in China, a glaring omission that reflects the impasse at which it has left the Biden administration. The administration has been stymied by how to deal with TikTok even as intelligence officials have warned that it poses a national security threat.

White House plans to restrict some USA investments in China
White House on Wednesday will detail its plans to prohibit some USA investments in sensitive technology in China, and require that the government be notified of other investments, a senior government source told Reuters. The plans are aimed at preventing USA capital and expertise from helping develop technologies that could support China's military modernization and threaten USA national security. Reuters reported on Friday that President Joe Biden was expected to issue a long-awaited executive order to screen outbound investments in sensitive technologies to China this week. The senior government source said that the order is expected Wednesday. The White House declined to comment on Tuesday. Biden administration officials have stressed for months any restrictions on USA investment in China will be narrowly targeted.

Beware! These Chinese hackers can hack emails, bank accounts, government data and corporate financial data
hacking teams have been recently identified by Western intelligence agencies and cybersecurity groups. These groups are allegedly responsible for digital intrusion campaigns targeting government, military, corporations, and media organizations worldwide. While cybersecurity firms believe many of these teams are backed by the Chinese government, China's authorities have consistently denied any involvement in state-sponsored hacking. They assert that China is also a frequent target of cyberattacks and have referred to the U.S. as an «empire of hacking.» Here are some major hacking teams based out of China.

China export controls will hit companies' revenue: US commerce secretary Gina Raimondo
US commerce secretary Gina Raimondo said on Wednesday that the Joe Biden administration is seeking to carefully target US controls on exports to China, but rules will cost firms some revenue. Restrictions should not be so broad «that you deny American companies revenue and China can get the product elsewhere, or China can get the product from other countries,» Raimondo said at a forum.
