What's the buzz about Amethi, the erstwhile Gandhi pocket borough?
Amethi is back in news and buzzing with excitement. Even as the BJP leaders taunt Rahul Gandhi for leaving Amethi constituency for Wayanad in Kerala, videos of massive cleaning and renovation work at his house in the town were shared on social media. This has led to hope among the Uttar Pradesh Congress cadre who were demoralised after signs that Rahul may not fight from Amethi this time. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul contested from Amethi and Wayanad. He lost to BJP's Smriti Irani in Amethi, but won from Wayanad. Rahul Gandhi represented Amethi from 2004 till 2019. The seat is also associated with Rahul’s father Rajiv Gandhi, who represented the seat between 1981 till his death in 1991. Sonia Gandhi contested elections from here in 1999 and passed it on to Rahul in 2004. The workers engaged at Rahul's bungalow at Amethi were not just cleaning but also seen clearing the garden area, TOI has reported. Tent poles and material for a canopy were also seen lying near the house. The workers said that they were hired by the party. “I am told that Rahul Bhaiya will come soon. Therefore, all the cleaning and renovation work is being done,” said one of them. Asked to comment on renovation work underway at Rahul’s home in Amethi’s Gauriganj area, ex-MLC Deepak Singh said, “This is routine. Whether or not he contests elections from here, he is sure to visit Amethi during the campaign time.”

Wealth redistribution: The economics behind Rahul Gandhi's 'Robin Hood' idea
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's promise of wealth redistribution has kicked up a huge controversy. While the idea itself has been controversial — right from the bloody revolutions of the past century that promised the poor the wealth amassed by the rich to contemporary debates in economics on how to address inequality and poverty — a comment on Rahul's plan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought the issue to the headlines. PM Modi alleged on Sunday that «Congress wanted to confiscate people's wealth and redistribute it to Muslims». Yesterday, adding that opposition parties had done nothing for Muslims, he reiterated his allegations, saying that the Congress was «looking to survey earnings and wealth of people, including their vehicles, property, and houses to redistribute it in line with a communist ideology that INDIA wanted to implement in the country». What did Rahul Gandhi say

State saw rampant regional bias, favouritism in jobs during Cong rule: Haryana CM Saini
regional bias and favouritism in jobs while corruption was rampant in all spheres when the party was in power in the state. At a poll rally in Bahadurgarh under the Rohtak parliamentary constituency, he claimed the Narendra Modi government initiated many schemes in the last 10 years for the benefit of the poor and farmers, bringing smiles to their faces. On the other hand, the Congress in the six decades it was in power did nothing for poverty alleviation in the country other than raising the «garibi hathao» slogan, he alleged. In a veiled jibe at Rahul Gandhi, the senior BJP leader said, «Now, the Congress' 'yuvraj' says he will eradicate poverty in one stroke. Which 'Aladdin Ka Chirag' (magic lamp) has he got now?»

Vijayan accuses Modi, Rahul Gandhi of covering up Kerala's progress with lies
Lok Sabha polls just five days away in the state, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday intensified his attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing them of attempting to cover up the progresses achieved by the state with «lies». Modi and Gandhi have a similar voice while speaking against the southern state, he told a press conference in Kanhangadu here. «A strange phenomenon is happening now in which the Prime Minister and the all India leader of the main opposition party are trying in unison to cover up the state (Kerala) and the progress it achieved with lies,» the Chief Minister alleged. Targeting Modi for his recent remarks against the state government, Vijayan said the Prime Minister had mentioned the other day that corruption thrives in Kerala like in Bihar. Through the statement, the PM is insulting two states at one go, he said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan compromised, attacks only Rahul Gandhi, Congress: Priyanka Gandhi
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday said that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is «compromised» as he «attacks» only the grand old party and Rahul Gandhi but not the BJP. The Congress leader said that Vijayan's name has come up in many scams, including 'Life Mission' and gold smuggling through diplomatic bags, but the BJP-led Central government has neither taken up any case against him nor carried out raids or any kind of action against him. «Like in a football match, you cannot win with a compromised player, the same way you have a compromised CM. He only attacks my brother (Rahul Gandhi) and the Congress party. He does not attack the BJP. „Have you thought about it? His name came up in so many scams — Life Mission, gold smuggling, many other scams — but how come the BJP government never put cases on him, never carried out raids on him and no action was taken against him?“ Gandhi said. She was speaking at a poll rally in the Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha constituency seeking votes for Congress candidate Anto Antony. The statement came hours after Vijayan raked up the DLF-Robert Vadra connection and targeted Priyanka Gandhi, who is Vadra's wife.

"Did Rahul Gandhi not get any safe seat other than Wayanad?": Karnataka BJP chief
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for not fighting Lok Sabha polls from the Amethi constituency, Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra questioned the intentions of Wayanad MP, saying that he could have opted for any other seat rather than contesting from a minority-dominated constituency. «What made Rahul Gandhi contest from Wayanad? Why did he escape from Amethi? I do agree that he has lost the confidence of the people of Amethi. But he is contesting from Wayanad where more than 70 per cent of people are from the minority community. Did he not get any other safe seat other than from a minority-dominated Wayanad? What message is he trying to give the country?» Vijayendra told ANI. On Rahul Gandhi's claim that BJP would not win more than 150 seats, Vijayendra said, «Instead of focusing on how many seats BJP is going to win, he should focus on his party.»

Rahul Gandhi 'hesitant' to contest from BJP-rules states, says Ghulam Nabi Azad
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is putting up a «brave fight» against the BJP, Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday said that his actions suggest otherwise and alleged Gandhi is «hesitant» to contest from the BJP-ruled states. He further alleged that Gandhi seeks refuge in states with considerably high minority population. Azad took a dig at Gandhi and National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah, referring to them as «spoon-fed kids» rather than politicians, and said that both have done nothing on their own. «Why is Rahul Gandhi hesitant to contest in the BJP-ruled states? While Gandhi claims to be fighting the BJP, his actions suggest otherwise. Why fly from the BJP-ruled states and seek refuge in minority-dominated ones?» Azad said while addressing public meetings in Sangaldan, Ukhral areas of the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.
