Budget home buyers priced out of Gurugram's luxury boom
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Bengaluru: Gurugram’s post-pandemic property boom, driven by soaring prices and a rush of luxury housing, is starting to run into its own limits, with developers and consultants warning that homes increasingly priced beyond the reach of end-users are getting harder to sell, even as the national capital's suburban city remains one of India’s hottest real estate markets. In today's Gurugram, high residential prices, large-sized homes, branded residences, and an increasingly luxury-focused market are leaving affordable and mid-income home buyers out in the cold.

India data protection law collides with digital lenders’ monitoring models
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. India's new data protection regime makes a seemingly simple promise: if an app can take consent in a tap, it must allow users to withdraw it just as easily. But in digital lending—where loans are priced, monitored and sometimes recovered using a steady stream of personal data—that promise is already running into the realities of regulated credit.

Flexible ticket pricing revives midweek cinema visits, but there’s a catch
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. NEW DELHI : Audiences are lapping up weekly ticket offers priced as low as ₹99, at least for films with strong word-of-mouth, providing a stamp of approval for the idea that reasonable pricing can lure large segments back to cinemas. Multiplex chains and independent theatres that introduced weekly offers such as “Blockbuster Tuesdays" in 2025 recorded higher-than-usual footfalls, especially for mid-budget, non-star titles.

Missing investment proofs that put salaried taxpayers on the taxman’s radar
In December 2025, several salaried taxpayers received emails and SMS alerts from the income tax department flagging discrepancies in deductions and exemptions claimed in their income tax returns (ITR).The alerts said certain claims did not match employer-reported salary data or other system records and needed revision. Most of the flagged cases involved returns where exemptions or deductions were claimed in the ITR but did not reflect in Form 16, said Nemin Shah, director at EQX Business Consultancy. If an employer deducted tax assuming fewer deductions, but the employee later claimed a larger set of exemptions directly in the return, it resulted in a refund of excess TDS. “Seeking a big refund results in the system likely taking notice and flagging it,” said Shah. This is where the annual investment declaration and proof-submission window with employers becomes critical.Every year, in January or February, employers ask employees to submit proof of investments and expenses declared at the start of the financial year.

Banks head into Q3 earnings with strong loan growth—but deposits, liquidity in focus
private sector banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and YES Bank are set to kickstart the third-quarter earnings season from 17 January.Non-food credit for the banking sector grew almost 12% on year as on 15 December, according to latest data from the Reserve Bank of India, driven by a consumption-led recovery and supportive regulatory measures. This was up from around 9% in May.“Growth momentum has strengthened over the past few months and credit cycle has seen a meaningful pickup after GST cuts…with the full 100 bps CRR (cash reserve ratio) cut now in place and recent supportive regulatory measures, further support to credit expansion expected ahead,” Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a pre-earnings note.Pre-quarterly updates from lenders suggest this momentum has sustained into the December quarter, even as deposit growth has lagged, at a little over 9% on year.Macquarie Research flagged that the loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) for the banking system has climbed to over 81%, the highest level on record.
